Question about the 8 outs

Whats up everyone..Now i understand the use of the 8 outs to an extent..but lets say your running the 8 outs..1 out for each track..i use a track for each of my drum sounds alone..if i wanted to track out everything individually into pro tools for example..wouldnt my 8 outs already be used up by my drums alone? how would i go about tracking bass..leads..strings etc. ?

You'd just do more than one run. The point of the 8 outs is to make it that much faster. If you were only going out stereo, meaning at most 2 sounds at a time, then you'd be making that many more passes to get all sounds used into your DAW.

so i can route the first 8 samples (lets say drums) as 1-8..record that..and then route the next set of sounds 1-8 also and record that the second time around?

Exactly. Or, 4 stereo tracks at a time, etc.

Seeing as drums are typically in mono, 8 at a time. But, let's say you have a stereo sample in the beat too, that would be assigned to like 1/2, or 3/4, etc.

I understand the concept of using the 8 outputs from the MPC. However, I do not understand how I would hook it up. From my mpc... what equipment do i need and how do i link the two to my laptop?

That depends on your goal.

If you use a DAW and have a piece of gear to go with it (such as Pro Tools and a Control 24/DIGI002/Command 8/etc) then that's the best setup, in my opinion. I have Pro Tools LE 7 with a DIGI002, which has 8 analog inputs and even more were I to use the digital. So, I have the ability to truly track 8 tracks, synced, out to Pro Tools when I want to do so.

But that doesn't mean you HAVE to do it that way. Let's say you had a regular mixer. You could bounce multiple tracks down (and perform your mix) on that, sending only its stereo record out to your computer for tracking, etc.

It just depends on what you want to be able to do really and what gear you have to do it. Worst case scenario, you have a single or double input soundcard and have to track no more than 1 or 2 tracks out at a time, but in that scenario the 8 out is doing you no good because you don't need it. Even if you have a soundcard that supports like 4 in, it's still worth usin the board for just those 4 at a time.

yea true, i was thinking id be good for playing it all out live & eqing it nicely but i think i'd be better off with the 8 input sound card

although im guessing that's going to be alot more expensive

ill check it all out cause ill probably end up doing alot of tweaking when it gets to my computer since all my previous production has been using software

i mean if i was going to eq it from a mixer then run it into my computer i might wanna also get a good preamp to tweak the sounds up alot better before i put it into reason or whatever

and you don't necessarily need an 8 input sound card if you aren't recording more than 8 tracks anyways. 8 i/o (input/output) can be quite expensive compared to some other smaller ones

A digital audio workstation, like Pro Tools, where you have software interfacing with hardware that converts the analog audio to digital data for manipulation (recording, editing, etc).
