Recording while midi synced

I have an MPC 2000XL. I use it to create drum beats with, chain into a song, then lock it to Sonar using midi sync.

On occasion the MPC will go goofy, causing the screen to display all types of weird messages. The only way to exit is to shut the machine off. Sometimes I am midway through creation and have not saved my beats to zip disc, I end up losing everything. It doesn't happen very often.

When it does happen, the Akai will continue to sync and play through the whole song. What I did last night was record the midi messages to a midi track in Sonar, so at least I have them saved.

My question is How can I dump these midi messages back into the Akai while it is synced with Sonar? I have looked through the manual but I cannot see how I can record the messages back in while synced. It seems to me the Akai should wait for me to press play on Sonar, then begin recording, but I cannot find that option. Also, it would probably have to be one large pattern. I had several patterns chained together in song mode before it crashed, now I imagine It will have to be one big long pattern.

The easiest way to transfer a midi file to the mpc is via the floppy drive. If you have a floppy drive on your computer that is... You can use any storage medium that the computer and mpc share.

Otherwise you can use the "record 16 channels" feature. Basically you sync up using midi clock or mtc - set the mpc to slave.

...and yes, it will all be one long sequence now. But you can split it up into bits again if you want. The mpc can't record in song mode, as you probably already know.
