lcd w/lines

yo, i know, i know, y'all are gonna tell me to search first--but i read the posts about lcd screens goin out and i've got a more specific (and quick) question.

i'm thinking of coppin an xl from a kid in town and, though it's only six months old, it's got the lines in the lcd screen.

what i want to know is: just because it has dead lines running through it, does that mean that the screen is definitely on the way out, or can it stay in fine working condition with the lines interminably?

it's important to know because the guy is selling real cheap, but if i have to pay $200-300 to get it fixed, then it's not worth it.

In this case the display is dying. The individual columns fail either by the bad contact foil or by defective driver IC. I assume it's the contact foil, because it's made very bad at the MPC2000(XL).

If the display would be completely dark, the KLK cold light cathode tube has to be changed.

The Akai display can't be repaired. The only thing that helps is a new display of Akai.

you will eventualy get more lines,but depending on how much you use it and how long you leave it on.ive been milking my screen for over 2 years,its at the point that if you dont know what everything is supposed look like its useless.if you order a replacement screen now maybe a year and a half from now when your screen is totally burned you might have a new one..maybe not.
if i was a big wig at akai i wouldnt even sell replacements,id make us buy brand new machines.how many people would run out and buy another mpc?theres no way in hell i'd switch to a roland or asr
i dont mean to ramble on but is it just the 2000 models that have garbage screens?

anybody heard whether the 1000's displays are built better, or are the gonna do the same?

You should be able to find a new display for about $40. I replaced a screen on an s950 sampler myself, it's real easy. Anyone who can hold a soldering iron should be able to do it.

I had to replace mine about a year ago and I ordered it from Akai. If I recall it was fairly resonably priced but it wasn't as low as $40 but definately less than $150. Be prepaired to wait though if it's not in stock but I only had to wait about a week and a half. I was told by Akai that the MPC2000 classic and XL share the same LCD screen.

isnt there a difference between a new screen and a new backlight?

The back light is part of the assembly and I don't think Akai would sell them seperatly. The LCD display on it's own is not very visible with out the back coating and light which is why it's sold as a complete unit.
