Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By djrag Sun Jan 20, 2008 3:55 pm
i have recently acquired my first 2kxl after years of wanting one, and after searching high and low for 8 outs separately i saw another 2kxl with it built it, so i snapped that up at a decent price.

looks like ill be getting rid of 1 now,, ill do some testing on them so i was just wondering as im quite new to mpcs if anyone could advise me some things to look for to decide which to keep...

i have done basic beatmaking on both (ie sampled, chopped samples, made a loop etc) so they seem to have the basics in full working order.

both have max 32 meg memory.

any advice welcome. thanks

I take it you found the test screen already where you can test the jog dial as well. That's one of the common parts to wear out. See that when you turn it in one direction, it does not count too many counts in the opposite one (some are ok). You should see what I mean when you are in the screen.

yeh i found that screen, i couldnt work out how to understand if it was "healthy" or not...i know its really hard to explain but can you try to explain a bit more what those numbers each side should o, i didnt really understand your explanation sorry!

It's really not that hard. You press Shift 5 - Shift F1 - MEMCHK - PADCHK - JOG.

There you see two groups of numbers. The left pair is counting the detected left increments of the jog wheel and the right is counting the right increments. When you turn it left, only the left numbers should increase and vice versa. However a few miscounts don't hurt. But a dying jog wheel would produce a lot more miscounts when you turn it.

Because the jog wheel is accelerated when you turn faster, the bottom number shows the actual change that is made for example when trimming a sample. The two numbers differ more the faster you move the wheel.

Concerning the pad test, I guess you could only test if every pad produces a velocity of 127 with the Full Level button on. Without Full Level, you need to hit them quite hard to get 127 velocity, that's nothing to worry about. The slider should go from 0 to 127 as well.

You're welcome.

If the slider is really messed up, you can also try cleaning it with Iso alcohol. That's what I usually do to get rid of the dust and carbon that collects in there. After that lubing it with some weapon oil helps making it slide nicely again.
