I literally just fixed this problem 1 min. ago on my xl. Download the os 1.14 for floppy, 1.20 for card reader model. You'll have to look around online. If you have a floppy drive, copy the os to floppy disk (if you have a card reader, load to cf card). When it asks for MPC disk, put the disk in, the os will auto load. Go to the load screen and select the file MPC2KXL.BIN and press load. It will say something about flashing the ROM, press do it. Afterwards you wont have to load the os from disk anymore.

try inserting the cf card after it is powered up and asking for the mpc disk.

once you load the os you need to save it to flash.

For starting up my MPC was only able to load the o.s. from a floppy.
I had to re-hook up the internal floppy drive for this..maybe you should try this too ?
After that i could load o.s.'s from cards.

you just need a standard floppy cable for data and to power up the drive the connector SHOULD be the same as on the card reader.
