Do you have a mixer? Get one with at least 3 band EQ on R/L channels and pump up the Low End. Trust me, it works and it's simple and often over-looked.

dont boost the low end, cut the mid and highs...results in the same thing, without distortion and a muffled low end.

loosing high & mid, does not result in the same thing, especially if the kick lacked any thump in the first place.

also depends how good your eq is...i use Logic Audio's Fat EQ, which never muffles my sound. infact the result is quite something.

to make a kick bang out...

well, apply some evelope decay, then layer another low boom kick with a medium decay (so that it doesnt boom too long) and filter the highs and mids on this kick.

this way you get the smack of the decayed kick, and the thump from a low end boom type kick.

there are many ways that know of...but i could be here forever.

also dont forget to apply some low end EQ at around 48hz or lower.

turn up the bass a bit ad turn down the mid and high a bit when you sample it... should do the trick.
