MPC2000XLZ Issues. "Z" is for Zip drive. Can you replace it?

Ok, so I have an MPC 2000 XLZ (a MPC 2000 XL with a zip drive in it) and the zip drive is crapping out.

Does anyone know of any other types of drives that you can install in this thing? I don't really want to have to resort to scouring the internet for a SCSI external hard drive just to keep using my MPC. But, it seems really silly to me that AKAI would design this thing to be completely obsolete with the what was clearly going to be the inevitable demise of Zip drives.

Is there some other kind of current/standard card drive (CF card readers, or whatever) that you can just swap into this thing?

If anyone has any suggestions at all, I'm all ears, and am in-advance very appreciative!

I've gotten great milage out of my MPC, but if this is the end of the line for what is an excellent machine that is completely perfect otherwise, this is a joke and a big waste. Makes me not even want to consider Akai again

For the money I spent on maxing out this unit (which is basically useless now) I could have pressed two whole other records, and could have just basically done all my sampling and sample-based production from my computer instead. !!!

I know there's someone on this forum that knows more about this than me, but... As far as I know you can swap out the zip drive with a multi card reader - you need to go to the akai site and download the newest updated 2000xl operating system. I read a tutorial on doing this upgrade somewhere and it seemed kind of finnicky (i.e. you have to update the OS and install the drive in a certain order) - so you want to do some more research.

But it certainly can be done.

on the other hand, if you go to ebay and search for external drives for the mpc there's a whole host of paypal approved vendors with stuff out there - you could probably get a 9 gig scsi external hard drive setup for around the same price as the mcr upgrade...

I have a 2kxl, used to have floppy, I went to atapi iomega 250mb zip, then I went to atapi mcd reader 3 years ago.
I use 2 x 512mb cf cards. I'm on os 1.14. The lastest os 1.20 is for cards over 1gb I think. If you use 1.20 and use a
2gb cf just split to 2 x 1gb partitions. Many people have had problems getting sd cards to work and I personally have
never gotten an sd card working anyway, just go with cf's only.
