750mb internal zip drive update

greetings friends...a couple of weeks ago i posted a question asking if anyone has had success installing a 750mb internal zip drive to their 2k xl. there was a lot of great feedback. since that posting, i have purchased and installed a 750mb zip drive. the following are some pro & cons that i have faced:

pros: (1) you have a lot of space to save whatever you want (just about). (2) you can load huge audio files that can be incorporated into your tracks.
(3) it was really cheap to perform the whole operation: $100.00 for internal zip drive (750mb) (purchased from a local mom & pop shop). $40.00 for wiring harness (data cable and power cable - purchased from akai). $40.00 for two 16mb memory chips to max out the 32mb memory (purchased from online website).

cons: (1) because you can load and save large files, you quickly run out of memory, so you're pretty much forced to upgrade your memory from the standard 2mb to either 16mb or 32mb - which presented a problem of its own b/c no local store sold the memory (however, i did find an awesome online site that sells it cheap ($20.00/block)...if interested, shot me an email). (2) not very many people use a 750drive, so they don't have 750 disk which limits your ability to share sounds or demo your sounds in someone else's mpc (although the 100mb & 250mb disk are compatable with the 750 drive, the 750mb disk are not compatable with the smaller drives.

all in all, i am very satisfied with the installation because of the luxery of what seems to be unlimited disk space. i'll probably purchase another internal zip for my cpu so that i can easily download sounds from whereever, save them to disk, and load them into my mpc.

i wouldnt mind throwin a 250 zip in my joint. the 100 i got installed holds me down though.

maybe it's because the redskins couldn't pull it together on defense (or offense for that matter); but i didn't see what all of the hype on champ was about. sad to see him go, as with any franchaise player, but maybe the lack of so many superstars on the defense (bruce, lavar, champ) will help the team to focus on whats important - teamwork and winning.

don't know too much about the running back coming from denver, but i trust that coach gibbs either knows or has a good idea of what is best for the team.

oh i was just about to post a question regarding this, because my scsi adapter broke yet again, and im sick to death of lugging around this big scsi thing.

what is the name and model of the zip drive (100 or 250 plz) that you bought which works best in the mpc2000xl?

-iomega internal zip drive (100mb, 250mb, or 750mb)(the zip disk will cost ~$8.00 (100mb), ~$12.00 (250mb), and ~$15.00 (750mb).
-call akai @ 909.869.8870 to order a zip drive kit...it will plug your new zip right into your mpc.
-i found the memory at www.4allmemory.com (you can actually select akai and mpc2000xl, and it selects the correct memory for you).

I can also verify the compatibility of 750mb ide Zip-drives with an MPC2000XL, been using one for over a half a year now.

I bought my MPC fitted with a 100mb Zip-drive, then switched it myself to a 250mb model, only to find out a few weeks later that 750mb Zip was also available. Didn't think twice about switching again, so I bought two. One for my MPC, one for my PC.

For me the reason to use the 750mb Zip is not only the extra space, but the difference in loading and saving times compared to the older models. (Yes, even the scsi-zip.) The 750mb drive is phenomenally fast.

Did you call AKAI to get the wiring harness? I'm getting sick of toting around my external 250 meg zip drive, and having to either leave it on or unplug the power because there is no power switch. I'm looking on Akai Pro's website and I do not see the wiring harness needed

For those of you who are curious as to how much faster the 750 zip drive is over the 250, here is a quick comparisson:

External 250 meg SCSI zip drive:
Rotational Speed: 2941 RPM
Transfer Rate: 2.4MB/sec max

Internal IDE 750 meg zip drive:
Rotational Speed: 3676RPM
Transfer Rate: 7.5MB/sec max


The 750's transfer rate is only good with 750 meg disks. If you use a 250 meg disk, it will be a lot slower ... so if any of you upgrade to the drive, make sure you use the new disks (unless you are fine with using your 250s or *gag* 100s)

You get the memory off of a site or on eBay... I still got the stock 2 megs so I need a hook up on that and I hate eBay, Pretty much.

Just a reminder tho.. 750 Zip-drive can read and write 750 & 250 Zip-disks, but it can only read 100 Zips, not write to 'em.

So anyone who thinks of upgrading, be ready to transfer your stuff to 750 disks. (And hey, it's a good thing for everyone to go thru their old stuff every now and then, there might be some good ideas and sounds forgotten on old disks..)

Thanks for the info kylelogan! I've had no problem with my 250 but I have had thoughts of upgrading to the 750. Problem is, I'll have to buy one for my computer to utilize the MPC Editor to edit samples.

It's nice that you can read from the box, but can you post actual observed data transfer rates with the MPC? Iomega tends to overstate this and is not realistic for for most systems (including the MPC's). A comparison between internal 750 to internal 250 or 100 would be nice also.
