Yo peoples,

Can i just ask is there something i am missing when making a FUNK loop on the mpc2000. The timing settings 1/8,1/16,1/32 etc just pull everything in square taking that funk groove away. Is there like a groove control setting .. is is my method just plain wrong!

if you press open window on the timing settings you can change the swing of the notes. I think that's your only groove control, but I'm not sure cause I have an XL.

ok thanks for that... so what do you have your timing set at, say to make a nice laid back pete rock beat? 1/16?

At the main screen hilight TIMING and hit OPEN WINDOW.

Play with the TIMING, SWING and EARLIER/LATER settings. You will find your groove in there somewhere.

I mainly record in 1/16(3) and 1/32(3) in case you were wondering.

why dont you make a laid back slackness beat. turn of the quantise if you are confident you got the timing down pat. other than that a swing value of around 60% should laze it up a bit.

I agree with nanoloop - the best way to get a groove sounding like you want is to turn off quantise and just play it - if you screw up, just 'UNDO SEQ' and do it again. It's not that hard to build a drum groove - like most things, it just takes practice, patience and perseverence

Hell yeah. I started doin this like a few days ago and it is diffucult at first, but my timing is gettin tighter every day. It sounds so much more rythmic and syncopated.

i think most hip hop producers have become very adept in hitting in beats- like drums it will take practice but once you've got the skills it will become second nature.....for straighter dance styles i often have quantize on the solid rhythmic elements and off for the percussions etc...
