Internal ZIP Drive

Is there a difference between all the internal ZIP drives? There's so many on ebay for about 10 bucks and they all look the same and I think MPCstuff.com sells them for 100 bucks. Is there a difference from the ZIP drive they sell and the ones on ebay? I just don't want the external one. Thanks.

There are two different types of internal zip drives - SCSI and ATAPI(IDE). Either will work in an MPC2000XL but only the SCSI types will work in the MPC2000, MPC3000 or MPC60. ATAPI drives are generally cheaper on eBay than the SCSI models. The SCSI internal zip drives only come in 100MB size; the ATAPI drives come in 100MB and 250MB, so choosing ATAPI if you have an XL is the best way to go.

If you are looking at 100MB internal zip drives on eBay, the auction should clearly state whether the drive is SCSI or ATAPI. If it is a 250MB internal, then you'll know it is ATAPI.

Is there anything else required for that installation. It seems like all they are selling is the drive itself, no cables are pictured. I do have a floppy drive in working condition. Do I use the same plugs? Any drivers needed to be installed as well? Or is it just plug and play? Thanks a lot for the help.

No, your floppy cable will not work. The nice thing about the MPC2000XL is that it has internal connectors for both IDE and SCSI, right next to the floppy connector. This makes it quite easy to install an internal drive (zip or card reader).

If you get an ATAPI(IDE) zip drive, then you'll need a standard IDE cable, just like what you use for most IDE hard drives. If you get a SCSI zip drive, then you'll need a 50-pin SCSI ribbon cable. You can find either on eBay for next to nothing.

No drivers are needed (you cannot install a driver on a sampler anyhow!) - your MPC will recognize the drive as soon as it is connected and you boot up. Installation is very easy but if you have any questions, contact us directly by email or phone and we'll be glad to help.
