Installing a Zip in XL problem

I sold my old XL for some stupid reason but bought another mint, hardly used example and Im trying to put a 250 zip in there.
Im having a problem getting the XL to see it. Can I just check some things with anyone who is hot on the XL.

I have a standard IDE ribbon cable with all pins connected. Its connected on the board with the red stripe closest to the power supply and at the other end with red stripe closest to the molex power connector.
Red and black from the old floppy cable connected to the 5 V and ground on the Zip. The zip is set as a master on the jumpers.
Ive flashed the os to 1,14. The Zip spins up as normal but the MPC errors when a zip is put in (error 0000:BFF2).

Other than that is a mint unit, even the slider work

My first thought would be a zip drive problem - do you know for sure the zip drive is any good? Have you tested it on a PC before installation?

try to switch the jumper. i know you said its on master but some times it is backwards from the factory.

I sorted it out last night and the solution to this problem is not the drive or the installation, it's the OS.

When the error code happens, any button push will crash the MPC out. This has to be something to do with memory allocation and drive mapping

The zip drive would not be detected by the AKAI OS and then it caused problems with the SCSI bus too.
The MPC and the external SCSI zip had been turned on and off maybe 20 or 30 times. This made no difference at all.

While it was all connected with the MPC in the main menu, I powered down the external SCSI. Turned it back on, then inserted a zip cart. The MPC then picked up the External.

I then opened a program, and then edited it. Then, saved it back to the external drive. This save process kited the OS into action. The Apti now became active which then allowed me to save it again to the internal zip. It must be how the OS indexes the memory and maps drives. If there are any inconsistencies it will just crash.

The internal zip is seen fully by the OS and is working as it should be

I hope this helps anyone with the same error @ 0000:bff2 error

I take it back......Fired the XL up tonight and its still doing it.

Back to the drawing board.

Never do what you did above anymore. You always follow this rule with the MPC & SCSI device Power Up MPC Last & Power Down MPC First.
Here is your problem you need a new Flash ROM and there expensive but if it's worth it to you then get it I am almost positive that's your problem.

yeah installing a zip drive is THE PROBLEM... because u should be installing the smart card drive

Aint got another £50 to throw at the XL unless your offering?

Used zips with all my other 2000's with no problems at all. With 32Mb, I think 250 is enough.

works fine everytime after Ive loaded something from the scsi zip first.

Whats the difference with this zip install compaired to my others? Ive used a double IDE lead. So does this mean that the jumper settings need to be different than if I was using a single IDE cable?

Im not sure and can't be arsed to strip it down tonight.

714 Beats. Regarding SCSI. Ive never disconnected anything while there's power connected only the main powers witch to the SCSI drive which in hindsight played no part in the problem logic trail. That was me throwing a red herring at myself.

So you think it may be the Flash Rom. What makes you think that? can I test it in some way. Ive never used it before or is it just where the OS is stored?

Im sure I ran OS 1.2 with my other XL with zip. Someone may correct me on that one, but its the only OS I had one my PC.

Is it worth doing os 1.14 again?

i am haveing the same problem ,, it said load disk ,, but the screen shows

Solution..... it was the zip drive. I have 2 x 250 drives and 2 x 100 drives. The 250 drive that was in the XL was the same revision as the one in my PC, I swapped them over and it works. The PC has no prpblem with the dicky zip drive and the XL works with the other. Weird.
I tried the XL with both 100 drives and it worked fine. Put the old one back in and it errored again. This is with the same cabling and setup so it has to be the drive.

Im a happy camper now.
