Scored a free 2k

My friend found it in the trash. It starts up but the screen is all lined to hell. Everything else seems to be working (it even had the original akai boot disk in the drive, starts up, the metronome allowed me to test the L/R out), and has the eight out expansion board. Not sure about the ram until I fix the screen.



The problems seem to be that the disk drive is noisy when booting up (is this normal?), the screen needs replaced, and some of the PLAY/REC buttons seem to have broken off (sensor udnerneath is fine and works, I have the buttons, the two plastic hinged holding it to the part that connects to the machine snapped off, is this fixable or do I need to just buy all new buttons?) I think I figured out that this is normal and you just place them there when closing the case?

That's easy to fix. Even the screen, which will cost you around 250$ is nothing compared to the freebie you just cop'd. Jesus man, found in the TRASH?!

Yeah it's got eight outs which has me hoping it has maxed memory.

I'm dropping loot on a screen and using it for drums. Maybe buy a one of those scsi card readers as I don't think I can go to floppies after being used to cf cards and harddrives.

What about installing a card reader? Can you do that on a 2k classic? I know you can on an XL.

You can install an internal card reader into a 2000 Classic but it has to be a SCSI card reader and it is more work. There is no internal SCSI connector inside the 2000 like there is on the XL, so you have to rig up some custom internal ribbon cabling.

I fixed some buttons on my 2K recently (more accurately I took buttons from my 2K to use in my XL and then put the broken XL buttons back in the 2K). They should be attached to the PCB by a clip - it is possible to simply slot them in place, but they'll probably rattle around and sit awkwardly, sink down lower than the other buttons and so on. I used some glue to fix the button tops to the 'stems' they had broken off from, and that kept them in place fine. They're also very cheap to replace if you look online.

One thing you might find is that the buttons come as a set of three, all joined together. The holes in the PCB suggest it's possible to replace these with single buttons.

Until now, I thought I was doing good when I bought my 2000XL for $100. I wanna take it back and get a price adjustment on it now! haha

DAMN!!!!! Lucky!!!!!! I guess I should'nt complain though... I got my XL for a pretty good price. NOT FREE NOT 5 dollars but still a good price but congrats on your find!
