What is QuNeo?

QuNeo is a different species of pad controller for electronic musicians, DJs, VJs and DIY hackers. While it covers all of the functionality of other pad controllers, QuNeo adds the power of touch recognition in other dimensions.

Drum Pad: QuNeo will work like popular Akai and Korg pad controllers.

Grid: QuNeo will work like Monome and Novation controllers by providing 64 notes with pressure and multi-color LEDs.

QuNeo Features

Tactile Pads, Sliders, Rotary Sensors and Switches

Each of the 27 pads, sliders and rotary sensors are pressure, velocity, and location sensitive. Even the 17 switches respond to how hard you press.

LED Light Feedback

A remarkable lumination scheme combines variably diffusive elastomers with 251 multi-color LEDs providing visual feedback that is immediately responsive and delightfully informative. Man and machine are coupled through light, feel and sound.

Trigger Pads

16 square pads provide 127 levels of Velocity response. And X-Y location. And continuous pressure. For each pad. Times sixteen.

Rotary Sensors

2 rotary sensors allow you to scrub, trigger, stretch, pinch and play phrases and sound files, manipulate continuous controllers and more . Each rotary sensor measures angle, pressure and distance from the center.

Multi-touch Sliders

9 touch sensitive sliders can be mapped to fader and effects controls. LEDs within each slider act as VU meters or remind you where you were. Multi-touch lets you select a length between two fingers to set stereo locations or filter resonances. Tapping a slider can mute or toggle any track or function.

Switches

The switches are located in smart groupings to select samples, fader banks, and transport controls. Each of the switches can scan up and down through files at speeds variable with your touch. Great for quickly locating that perfect fill or telling your looper you really meant it.

The Size of an iPad.

QuNeo is the size of an iPad and can fit in iPad accessories such as mic clips, stands and more.

Velocity sensitivity has always been the one thing the iPad needed and my only real gripe with it in terms of musical performance.

This is a good idea, but I have no doubt the big companies are already developing their own velocity sensitive touch screens. Once that happens, this will just become another controller in an already over-saturated market.

Imagine this implimented into the iPad! For a start you could create custom layouts and not be limited to their design, and it would omit the requirement for all those LEDs.

Like I said, nice concept, but it'll be overtaken in a heartbeat.

Tom Oberheim should've made them a custom analogue circuit to go with it, then it'd have some longevity :wink:

except that this appears to be an open platform for end-user developers like myself (and better) to take a crack at.

that's where this has the competition beat.
all these other chump companies are too thick to open source.

I wonder how much more functionality could be added to this though, or would it be more along the lines of writing scripts in Max that this could be applied too?

I mean I know I keep banging on about iPads, but they really are a blank canvas for app development. This controller will always be limited by it's layout surely?

What do you think Nym? What would you like to develop for this if/when it comes out? I know it's a bit hard to reel things off the top of your head, but I'm interested now.

Despite the size, QuNeo is more like an MPD than an iPad. Sensors on the whole controller are covered in silicone rubber, like mpc pads. Plus, aside from velocity, each pad has continuous pressure CCs. This is something we doubt iPads will be doing any time soon!

We love tactile pad controllers & we're excited to be making the very best one!

midi controllers often appear far more limited than they are. "only 8 faders? really?"
but what if you use 1 fader as a bank selector for the other 7? suddenly you have 21, 28 faders you can use. this is just a small example of the possibility - a simple concept for the sake of brevity.

absolutely stuff like max, or receiving-end midi vsts that manipulate your control signals. but that's besides the cool factor of this controller, as you can do that with any midi controller.

What do you think Nym? What would you like to develop for this if/when it comes out? I know it's a bit hard to reel things off the top of your head, but I'm interested now.


HELL yes, if it's anything like Arduino (C++, midi library, etc) then i would love to develop for it. if nothing more it looks like a fantastic live platform. in the studio, it can be an excellent control device. the ultimate usefulness of this is yet to be seen but i guarantee that if a company gives their user base any kind of agency when it comes to actively developing the software, you will see a better product for the larger community.

If you can assign any of the Tactile Pads, Sliders, Rotary Sensors and Switches anywhere, you are set. The potential is really big on this thing from the way I look at it.

Yep, you can and will be able to! Out of the box, the buttions will be assigned to internal bank selection, but this will be customizable in our editing software!

This looks like it would make a good controller for Reason 6 to get more all around flexibility with Kong. I'd definitely have to give it a try when it hits the market. Seems like a good space-saver as well. So if the feel is as good as the specs, this might end up being perfect for my rig. 8)
