TASCAM

yo whats up couple a questions...
i was looking at getting a tascam to run drums and samples etc through to get a gritty analong nice warm sound happening
i got this gear so far..

Mpc
Soundcraft epm6
technics TT
DJ mixer
midi keyboard
and other old keyboards etc
i bought a tascam424 but the dude refunded my money before i got it cos it had a faulty input and now i cant find a 424.. i been doing research but my main question is.. can someone name all the TASCAMS that i should be looking at for my setup.. theres a few around just no 424 at the moment and the 424 was my first option cos running drums and samples through them sounds epic. also are there any other tape or other multi trackers that give that same nice sound that run game on the tascams.

I normally use a 24x8 large format mixer. But because of space, I started using my old tascam 688 which does seem to smooth out the sound.

I've actually seen a few on ebay, so I don't think they're hard to find. Probably hard to find in good to excellent condition is more like it.



8 track cassette w/ built in midi sync capabilities.

yeah, fostex made similar stuff.. and yamaha

i live in new zealand we use a site called trademe.co.nz not ebay.. dope things pop up but tascams only pop up now and then.. theres a fostex on there but its digital and from the knowledge i gained so far its the tape the smooths out the sound and gives it that stonned feeling.. i been working pritty hard to get money and sort the best gear for my type of sound.. but at the mo i can only sample from TT through mixer into mpc and play round as my computer and better monitors are still on there way.
i wont a tascam cos i know of alot of songs that use it just for that sound then send the mix back to computer and its a nice calm sound.. but if theres a digital multitracker that would go good with my setup above or any other machines that team up well with Soundcraft Epm6 mixer/Mpc etc drop a note here.

that particular portastudio isnt that wanted i read somewhere.. (because it only records one track at a time?) hmm lemme look something up

i just bought a 424 mkii (50€ :p hasnt arrived yet tho..) the earliest models are cool too i think, and have nice meters i plan to record the different outputs of my mpc 2KXL on it (i dont see me using all 8 of them... for the moment hehe), and not to sample from the portastudio. i think thatll give a more varied/interesting sound (because the velocity of the samples will have an impact on the saturation etc) i also dont mind a little wow and flutter

and i could record some bands with it (maybe mine too.. but thats gonna take some bouncing i think)

also look around for tascam 388.. its a bit 'more'

oh and another thing: portastudios arent exactly hi fi.. this can be a good or a bad thing off course..

i dont have the experience to claim this, but ive read that 'real' tape is another thing..

if you can't find the tascam 424, there is also a tascam 414 which is essentially a more portable version of the same 4-track [just with less EQ knobs]... and as far as other brands, the fostex line of tape recorders would be my second choice if you can't find a tascam...

allright yo thanks for that knowledge ill keep a look out for the 414 and fostex ones with similar setup. the 424mk2 is my steez but i aint seen one floating round yet other than the one i almost captured hah.

Its mint, used it several times until I copped the DP01 a year later. Its been in my cabinet ever since.

Ill green.. i live in New zealand man.. if ya seen the earthquakes on the news thats were im at.. postage from were ever you are to NZ would be f'n huge and prob get smashed in after shocks hah.. but you upgraded to a dp01 just wondering why cos its the tape that gives that classic warm stonned sound but in saying that i aint used a digital one before and it sound like we be using them for different reasons.. ?

They were made to record, what else would you use them for? Unless you plan to open it up and mod it to manipulate the recording to do some sick sgt. pepper sh!t.

Warm is how you make it is what I always say. I upgraded because it was 8 track and provided hours of recording time, which was really what all I needed. I remember only getting 3 songs out of a 90 min tape. And those tapes specifically for the machine were $20 for 3 pack. Go figure. But the only regret to the switch is that I do miss the Pitch wheel, I use to have alot of fun recording and using that, that was cool.

for some people they use it to send samples/drums through the tape tascam and back to computer to get that smooth og tape sound its half the reason the 80s and 90s are knowen for best sounding beats its 2010 why else would you wont a tape muti tracker? digital ones are mostly the same price as a good condition tape one.. i am yet to record with one but i know alot of well respected artists and groups over the years that use/used them and you can tell easy as the final song is the true meaning of smooth unlike the majority of full digital songs that may sound cool but hurt your ears and make you skip tracks. someone here is gonna be able to explain and put the nail in coffen so ill let them comment.. cheers ill green.

the 424mkii arrived yesterday, but my moms put it out of my sight until today (my last exam :p)
i think ill post here what ive done with it!
