not everyone can afford the most accurate monitors as it is, too.

so if your mix is tight on some cheap nearfields, headphones, bookshelf speakers, a decent sized boombox, and of course the whip...you should be in the right ballpark before you send the tracks off to be mastered

yeah like they said personally i always do my final mix with my monitors but i usually dont even play beats out loud until that time. phones let u hear it up close and personal like D said. but straight up, using my ath-m40fs has my mixes pretty much there when its time for the final mix

I have them too and I have been told by a professional engineer that my music was very "close" to red book masters. I don't monitor until dead end after the mix, I trust my system in my living room, I usually save about 2-4 mixes anyway and then I can just go back and compare other mixes.
