drum tools

i think its pretty obvious that what ever specific technique you use to create your drums and make them bang, there is some use of: eq,compression,layering,sampling,bit crushing,mangling

im interested in knowing about the tools you actually use to get those things done; and possiblely learning about other options i may have for my disposal. what are the tools you like to use when creating/designing your drums?

when i say tools, i mean specific names of compressors, eqs, plugins, outboard gear and the charicteristics / features of those tools that you like - example: "i like to use xxx vst for bit crushing because of xxx reason"

emu mophatt + its filters:

for a while, i was using the emu mophatt to layer phat kicks under sampled drums. i used the mophatt to do this with my mpc because i could take advantage of the emu filters. here's how i'd do it: i'd sample a drum from vinyl, like a kick drum from a break. i'd trim it up in my mpc. i'd have my emu mophatt midi'd up to mpc, i'd play both the sampled kick and a preset kick from the mophatt at the same time..... i'd go through differant presets until i found a kick drum i thought might beef up my sample when layered. then i'd start to tweak the emu filters to increase/decrease differant parts of the emu kick until it sounded good (sometimes i'd try differant filters, mess with the filters parameters).

the mophatt's filters where easy and fun to get something banging, adding it to sampled sounds helped me get original drums. the cool thing with the emu filters are that they have a variety of types, so its more like sound shaping filters, not just your typical lp,hp filters - creative eqs.

after i got something i liked, i'd sample the mophatt and layer inside mpc, resample, done. sometimes i'd tweak the mophatt drums and end up not even using the original sample i started with.

ive gotten some dilla sounding kicks with mophatt and its filters.
