I Googled it. There's a program that'll do it (insomnia, I think) but you dont need it. Just plug in a keyboard... close lid.. when it goes to sleep press a key on the keyboard and it should wake up with the screen still closed (so says Google). Its also said that heat escapes through the keyboard so runnin it like that for extended periods of time aint smart.
that's pretty much it, dont gotta wait for it to go to sleep, if your external monitor isnt setup as main monitor. once you close the lid it will automatically switch to it. I know the main air vents are where monitor hinges. Personally I like to use both screens my mbp and external 28" monitor as main monitor. I usually run my DAW on big screen, and small stuff like battery maschine or browser on macbook display.
