sampling hot : mpc 60 vs s900

Ive been experimenting sampling the same breaks into my s900 and my mpc60 at different levels, to get that subtle (or not so subtle!) distortion when you sample hot.

One thing I've noticed as i push the record levels is that the high end gets lowered on the mpc60 samples but on the s900 it stays the same. Also when i import the 60 samples into my computer using translator, the samples do have the high end there -so it seems to be just playback of the samples from the main outs of the 60. The suprise for me is that it wasnt the other way round as the 60 has got a higher sample rate (40k vs 32k if i remember correctly?)

anyone else tried this? I guess its more to do with the different sampler designs rather than a problem with my 60 as the high end is ok when i dont push the record levels.

Id be interested to know if anyones got any info or experiences on this.

I wonder what the effects might be as you sample sounds louder and louder but then compress them... it would probabyl continue to effect the high end even more like you noted...

S-900 has a variable sampling rate that can sample up to 40k which is the same as the MPC-60's sample rate...surely you should know this as you need to set the sample rate before you sample?!

the highest sample rate on the s900 is displayed as 16,000 ,a which as far as i knew was representing an actual sample rate of 32khz, due to all the nyquest stuff. Nowhere on this screen does it say 40,000 - but surely you should know this?

ah right ok man. im sory too! thats interesting ..im sure i read somewhere that the true sample rate max was 32khz but i might be wrong.

dont trust numbers in specs.

While the specs of the 950 said it could sample 48kHz, the display show 19200 bandwidth. .....Nyquist bla bla double frequency bla...... so the samplerate is 38,4 kHz

The analyzing of a white noise sampled on the 950 confirm this.



I'm interested in the real samplerate of the 60. Since there is no parameter to set the rate (or bandwidth) in the 60 we only got the specs that tell us 40kHz. Could you check (analyze) it? Or would you sample this:
