Innovine: prolly should start another thread, but I usually have a program for each distinct element (eg. hihats, shakers). If you have jjos2xl (if you don't, go get it), packed programs are awesome. Save them to separate "library" folder for later usage. Programs don't need to be perfect. Keep em as simple as possible so that they serve their purpose (quickly load, edit, save).
One useful tip for drums: assign similar sounds to same pads (eg. Kick on pad1, snare on pad3) across programs. Now when you load from your "library" folder all packed drum programs and go to track which has for example your snare, you can just scroll through your programs for a snare sound that works while your sequence plays.
