What do I need?

Innovine: prolly should start another thread, but I usually have a program for each distinct element (eg. hihats, shakers). If you have jjos2xl (if you don't, go get it), packed programs are awesome. Save them to separate "library" folder for later usage. Programs don't need to be perfect. Keep em as simple as possible so that they serve their purpose (quickly load, edit, save).

One useful tip for drums: assign similar sounds to same pads (eg. Kick on pad1, snare on pad3) across programs. Now when you load from your "library" folder all packed drum programs and go to track which has for example your snare, you can just scroll through your programs for a snare sound that works while your sequence plays.

KRK monitors, DAW and the MPC5000 is all you need. Just throw a turntable up in that **** and its a **** barbacue.

Any turntable will do really, but get the one with removable stylus so you can hook up a decent cartridge like Shure MX97E to get the best quality sound and maybe a cd player too.

Not really a MPC 5000 user but have to give a little bit of input from my side as a 2000XL user I feel like a lot of your questions have been answered, nobody can really give you advice on how to be better with it or as you very well know people can't teach creativity (unless you're the head from Art Attack) but when I made the switch from MPD + Logic + Reason to the MPC the main issue I had was literally that I couldn't do 'everything' I previously could on Logic... not sure how it is for the 5000 but simple things like being able to copy 8 bars paste them and drop things out easily is a little bit more complex. Maybe I'm just a nincompoop lol. But really get down with the manual use that sumbitch as your daily news paper/bible/whatever book you read daily!

The connection is a s simple as it gets:

Microkorg midi out is connected to the MPC5000 midi in using a single midi cable, that will allow you to enter notes into the MPC sequencer.

It's the same connection whatever synth or midi controller you decide to use.

I want to thank everyone again for the help. I honestly didn't think I would get this much. I am going to pick up a used controller, read the manual a couple, watch these tutorials and get to work. One last thing, is there any good thoughts on a nice turntable to sample with?

It wasn't a thread hijack, I felt it was perfectly relevant considering the OP asked about workflows within the MPC... just sayin
