My money would go to Maschine with VST support and all around better integration with the computer.

The Spark looks like a gimmicky drum machine for a novice or beginner.

I agree totally. From a features standpoint Maschine is so much more for the same money it's ridiculous how Arturia has priced this. I think Rob Papen's Punch is better anyway if you looking for a drum synthesis VST.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Personally, I am partial to the 4x4 pad design for sampling drum machines...and even Roger Linn himself can't sell me on a different layout. lol

While I don't exactly like the layout of the Spark controller, it appears to be more robust and higher quality than Maschine. Software-wise, Arturia put a lot of focus on the sound/emulations of classic gear which is a plus. But I haven't seen anything else that stands out and grabs me as I have watched some videos and read the manual. For a hyrbid product, Maschine has set the bar with plugin support. Any new competitor will have to have the same or similar feature set. Also, it should probably beef up areas where Maschine is lacking...mainly the sample editor.
