portable turntables?

anyone experience with the numark or the vestax? I'm thinking about grabbing one, I dont have tech12s anymore, and not much money either....so was thinking maybe one of these small portable ones, are the catridges user replacable?

how's the sound? good enough for sampling? the numark one seems to have mad outputs that'd be kinda useful.

I would definitely grab that one, I think it has its own little speaker too, which I find pretty kool.

they're good if you wanna take a turntable to a record fair or something... but they suck for sampling. the cartridge they ship with pretty much sounds like crap and can't be replaced with a different one... get a vintage "real" turntable with a nice cartridge instead. i speak from experience.

it doesnt sound that bad. if madlib and other famous heads can use one then they must work fine right?

If your going for the "grimy" sound then to me the portable turntable is a viable option. I hear cats talking about buying SP1200's and MPC 60's to get that "dirty" sound but all you really gotta do is just use a "sh!tty azz" needle. I've used my Numark portable to sample stuff before and to me it sounds pretty daWm good considering...

compared to a real turntable, it sounds like absolute sh!t. i wouldn't recommend buying one. again, this is from MY experience.

as far as madlib is concerned... he's a good producer, but he's also lo-fi as fvck... high quality sound & EQing are not things that he's ever concerned about when beat making. i remember hearing that he puts dave cooley through hell every time it's time to master his albums.

also, don't think that just because you seen one picture of madlib or dilla or whoever using a portable turntable, that they use that all the time in the studio... dudes got technics.
