ADAT on the 4k is optical.

Won't work with the Multimix, you'd have to find an interface with optical adat in and outs.

At this point I'm assuming all he owns is an XL, that's why I say junk the ADAT recorder route and think bigger.

Oh ok, yep. Something like or similar to the multimix.

I didn't read the multimix's specs but I wonder if the input channels can break out separately in daw's? Some interfaces join combine all inputs to ONLY stereo going through the firewire/usb (not able to select more than a stereo pair in daw), def something to watch out for when choosing gear.
