ROLAND SH-101 VIA KENTON WITH MPC 3K

Just wondering if you guys can help me out if youve got the time?

I want to use my SH-101 via a Kenton Pro Solo MKII as a sound module with my MPC 3K

Here is how i currently have it set up
SH-101: AUDIO OUTPUT to AUDIO INPUT of SOUNDCARD (MOTU 828 MKIII)
SH-101: MIDI IN to MIDI OUTA of MPC 3K

But im not totally sure what changes i need to make on the MPCs screen in order to trigger the SH-101 via the pads.

I thought it might be change TYPE: from DRUM to MIDI

but this didnt seem to do it.

I may not have given enough information, so please let me know if you need me to explain further

Use a midi track on the MPC3000 and make sure the MPC is sending midi to your synth on the midi channel the synth is set to receive on.

Try using all four pad banks to confirm the midi connection, the default MPC3000 pad assignments are mapped to GM drums and will be all over the place if used with a synth.

Next step is to build a chromatic template

You can change the MPC3000 pad to MIDI note assignment so that it is chromatic. Start with midi note 36 on pad A1, 37 on A2 and work your way up, or set up the template to your specific needs. You only have to go thru this tedious process once, but make sure you save that template as a program or in your default settings.

I have that same set up, and I also use it with a 60. Its pretty basic.

Like clint said, but I use a midi keyboard to play the sh-101. This eliminates having to set up the chromatic pad assignments.

Basically, I have the midi out of the midi keyboard connected to the midi in of the mpc.
Then the midi out of the mpc to the midi in of the kenton.

Set up a track on your mpc with midi mode on, and then assign a midi channel.. it wont work without doing this.

Then when you play the midi keyboard, the midi notes get sent to the mpc, which in turn sends those midi notes to the kenton, which is controlling the sh-101.

hit record on your mpc, it will record whatever notes you play from your keyboard, and simultaneously send that midi information to the kenton.

It's also important to make sure the settings on your kenton are right. I think that the factory settings should work automatically for the SH, but I'm not entirely certain.

I know nothing about those Kenton joints, which explains why I didn't mention it.

The midi handshake method is standard, but if you want to use the pads to trigger the synth you'll be needing that auto-chromatic template. The template will also save time where you have more than one synth connected to your MPC, you simply can't midi them all up to trigger and receive note data.

I find that using the pads to trigger a synth often provides better results than using keys.

The Chromatic template is interesting. I also just use a MIDI controller for theis (also own an SH101).

I think the only thing not mentioned in the above replies is setting your MIDI output and send channel on the MPC. So if you are using output A, as per your example, and channel 6, say, then it will need to be set to 6A. You can do this on the main screen.

Ok so on the main screen setting of the MPC 3K
I have things set as follows

Type: MIDI
Chn: 6A

But if i press the MIDI command button, then option 2.
What do my settings need to be there?

Active track receive channel: 6 (BUT DOES THIS NUMBER NEED TO BE FOR MY SH-101 OR MY MTC OR MMC)

then what about settings for
LOCAL MODE & SOFT THRU?

Im a novice at best so still not fully sure what these two things mean or relate to?
