In this one vid i guess yall know where hes dancing in front of his 2k hes saying like 'with the ASR I can chop samples into 61 pieces without wasting any memory'. Sure because of its 61 keys, but doesn't the asr's flash memory get used? How does he do it?

each chop does not create a new file, each chop just references the original sample.

See, im bout to cop a EPS 16+ and i wondered if 2MB is enough memory for sampling even with non-destructive chopping.
What do you think?

IMHO... I'd spend a little more and max out the RAM.
Here is where i got my ASR-10 RAM for dirt cheap...

4MB 30pin 80ns 8-chip non-Parity FPM SIMM

Each non destructive chop is about 5k of memory. Not enough to worry about. Managing memory is super important.

Although I like the idea of non destructiv choppin (my Casio FZ1 also us this) I don't really understand how this could be seen as "saving" memory (sure it is but only in specail cases.)

example:
If you sampled a 1 bar drumbreak (2 seconds long sample) and chop it up into 8 pieces(8th notes) with non destructive chopping, the unit always use this 2 second sample.

2 second sample used with the above method stays the same

If you use destructive chopping you'll have to copy the 2 second sample 7 times and trim each chop to the 8th note length but the memory beeing used is also 2 seconds

The memory thats beeing used is always 2 seconds.

The argument of "saving" memory is only relevant when you want to be able to play a chop longer than an 8th note (in this case)

With non destructive chopping the memory would still be 2 seconds but with destructive chopping the 8 samples would look like this (if you want to be ableto play each chop till the end of the drumbreak)

thats much more memory so NDC is a real plus in this case. I don't wanna hate on NDC but you'll have to ask yourself how often you use samples that really benefit from it.

i'm not following you peter...

if we think of a 'chop' as simply moving the start point, then what's the problem exactly?

it is impressive to me how the eps/asr to this day is basically unrivaled as far as intelligent sampling goes (the groundwork laid in what, 86?). i mean akai's 'game changer' can't even touch the concepts that this thing used in the 80s.

machinedrum and octatrack come close - i absolutely love the way the machinedrum handles samples - the only 'sample' editing is basically truncating (which you dont even do in the machine). every other sample parameter, start point, pitch, filter, etc is done dynamically in 'program' edit. always referencing that one sample in memory.

my only gripe is it's not really designed for instrument sampling, more just for drum sounds (sound familiar?). if there were a machine using that same paradigm and focused on it as the foundation, not just an add on, it would be killer.

the eps/asr comes close :mrgreen:

No problem if you define chopping like this. But I bet many people out there define chopping as : cut a sample in 8 or 16 pieces with equal length.

Like I said I like the idea od NDC. I just want to remind people that they only benefit from it if they really know how to use it. I don't want this function to end up like MPC swing: Everyone and his mother proudly talk about how dope it is but really don't know what its really about. And now that Kanye mentioned this nice function, 10000 kids will follow blindly.

i didn't realise the fz was as old. now that is an impressive machine just for how many synthesis methods they crammed into it.

you can copy a sample to each key (61 keys) on the eps, eps 16+ and asr-10 using the "copy params only" command. what it does is basically make a ghost copy of your original sample so you can change start and end points for each copy, without taking up much memory at all.

the asr-10 with maxed out memory has almost 3 mins of sample time, so if you sample say a 4 or 8 bar sample, then "copy params only" you can have that sample on all 61 keys to adjust start and end points, without taking up much memory.

it's one of the many great features of the ensoniq eps, eps 16+ and asr-10 and one of the main reasons a lot of producers still use them today.
