Hello! Long time lurker (great site!), first (real) time poster.
I've been using a Technics SL-3200 and Allen&Heath Xone 22 to sample with. It's good but, being direct drive, there's quite a bit of rumble there if I need to sample something hot, especially if it's a quiet sample, and even after having a full service and set-up etc. So I started thinking about getting a belt drive TT, reading, as I have, that they are generally prefered by audiophiles and bods on here for being quieter in that department. I also recently (finally!) found a place local to me that's worth going proper digging in - an old furniture shop with literally thousands of old LPs and 45s, stuffed away in the basement. I therefore started to think about jumping on the PT-01.
Reading up (on here, of course), it appears that the jury's out on whether they're good enough for sampling, pretty much split down the middle. However, for me, I think it'll do the trick, as I prefer it on the dirty/gritty side on things. I would probably be flogging the Technics/A&H when I get it, if I think it does suit my purposes, just coz I'm the sort of person who doesn't like having two of anything (not including old compressors or analogue delay units!).
Aaaaaaaanyway, so I started looking prices up etc and a load of hits in Google were bringing up the new PT-01 "Touring"; at the time not yet released (although I think it is now, a coupla days ago). It's got more of a "classic" styling, in a briefcase-type affair, and has stereo speakers. It doesn't appear to have pitch or tone control, altho it does have an internal rechargable battery (4 hours charge time when new, apparently) and a metal tone arm. Over here in the UK it's about £30 cheaper than the standard PT-01, despite it have these apparent upgrades.
So, I was wondering if anyone here knows much about it? Where they've made those savings despite apparent upgrades? Maybe the pre-amp isn't as good?
Or has anyone actually tried it yet? Info on the web is scant and I've yet to find a review. I'm tempted just to get the standard PT-01, just coz it IS the crate digger's standard, and due to it's smaller footprint...but am wondering if, at £30 cheaper and with those potential upgrades on the standard, I should be going for the Touring model? I've emailed Numark with my questions but have yet to recieve a reply (poor show!).
