Active vs Passiv studio monitors

I´ve been looking into buying some studio moniters and I just seem 2 get confused on what the difference is between passive and active monitors. What do they mean?

What other qualities should I look into when buying?

Which are some of the best monitors 2 check into in the price range of 700 bucks?

i think many peoples (like me) are using EVENT TR8 Monitors - i think you should get the XL version, you can get a pair for about 599$

Active speakers use an on-board amplifier. Passive speakers need a seperate amp to power them.

yup. so if u dont have an amp, go with active.

EVENT TR8s best bang for the buck...I don't see the point on buying passives then looking for the right amp...actives have the amp built in2 the monitors and its made specifically for the set...these are tight...have great bass and mixes translate well...if u go to guitar center and compare em w other monitors and show lots of interest u can haggle down the price w the dude...just have the money ready and be serious

If you have a good amp or stereo reciever then passive is the way to go.

with passive u need more gear. active the amplifeir to power the speakers is built into the speaker, hence taken up less room then a seperate amp and then the passives.

I mean ACTIVE.
