Multitrack Analog to Digi dump Question...

The Situation:
I wanna dump a 24tk 2inch tape analog session to Protools for easier mixing. The studio has a 24tk Motu AD interface (Firewire).

Question:
Can I bring a portable ProTools setup in (complete with FireWire Hard Drive) & connect to the studio's Motu interface to make it happen?

it shouldn't be a problem except that there are no portable 24 track pro tools interfaces. Mbox has 2 inputs, and 002 has 8. the 002 might be able to do 16 if you use the adat light pipe.

Thanks for your response. But I'm wondering can I use the Motu's & Protools firewire to dump all 24 analog tracks in one "pass"? Is it possible? Any comments, Please respond.

you will most likely have to install the drivers for the motu interface so you can do that. do you have two firewire ports? i think you would have to have them be able to do that. if they have any way of dumping them to a session and giving them to you as a file that would be the best thing for you as the a to d on that motu and the 001 and 002 and mbox are kinda weak. call around some studios around you, somebody will most likely be able to do a tape to pro tools dump. and check to see what kind of converters they have before you do it.

but rereading your post also reminded me that if you have a sync box, you could come in lightpipe from the tape to motu to digi and be done in 3 passses, but a to d is still sh*tty from that motu. see if anyone has an apogee and use that.

These are all good ideas. Here's mine:

First, I don't know about that MOTU sound, good, or bad. You can't go wrong with that apogee setup, but can you really get four AD-8000s together to do a one-pass deal? If you really want to do it super-fast-one-pass steeze, I would just arm 24 tracks of MOTU, dump your tape in all at once, and of course maintain good gain structure. Just make sure you start at 00:00:00. That way, all tracks start the same, and you export them as files to disk. F it, if you got disk space to spare and can't get the 24 apogee a/d, just use the MOTU in 96k, or at least 48k 24bit. When you use ProTools later, you can import the AIFFs into the PT session and convert tham to SDII at import. When you slam them all to the left, they lock up nice. Then boom, mix your 24 tracks.
