To double trigger you just have the full level on and hit the pad fairly lightly with the flat part of your finger. You can do it on the 1k, in fact it's what most newbies do and then post that their MPC is broken. :D

The pads on the 1k aren't too tough, my number 2 pad is pretty much dead, but it's nearly two years old I guess.

i dont know the 1k + 2kxl seems kind of a redundant combo to me, with that bread you'd be almost up to a 2500

other gear might make more sense to cop first?

Plus wasn't the 1k supposed to be the live MPC?

I don't recommend banging on the backbone of your sequencing/sampling. For this purpose, I recommend a midi drum pad like the Roland SPD6/20. Run its Midi Out into the MIDI In on the mpc. Default MIDI channel is 10.

the velocity response is better than any MPC plus you don't beat up on your BABY.

There are some other options from KAT/Yamaha but I can actually vouch for Roland's. If you wanna get super sick, you could cop a used electronic drum set and then switch the drum module for UR MPC.

I have exercised the demons,

Actually thats a good idea, if you pads are getting worn out you could by an mpd16 and midi it which is way cheaper than replasing the sensors.
