The 303 has definately got a crisper and hotter sound than the 404 - but the 404 is better than the 303 functionwise.

what about the 505? I like it better than the 303 and think I move quicker because you can actually see the wave forms

That is just analog to digital conversion...not sampling rate. The 303 had 20 bit converters as well.

i'm so tempted still by the 404. almost bought one, then i heard the new os is coming...so i decided to wait til it comes out and i master the new updates before picking one up and using it for external control/sample effects, etc

Me too. The fact that it is battery powered again and now uses a CF card makes it better than the 303 by far.
