Check out Sonar too...I've used 2.0 and now I got the 3.0 version. Available VST plug-ins can now rewire into the program. I know there are debates about hardware .vs software, but I used hardware for years (from 4-track digial tape to 16 track ADAT) and now that I've tried software, I love it. The flexibility and quick editing of software was the winning point for me. And about crashing systems, it's never happened to me. I never try to overload my system by having 5 million apps running at the same time. I know the limits of my computer and stay within them. Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro are also good programs. They're wave editors, not sequencers, but it can record everything you make in your MPC and it is very easy to use.
