MPC 1000 and midi controller

If i wanted to use my mpc 1000 for drums and a midi controller for melody's how would i do this... Basically what i want to do is take a sample and lay it a different pitches on each key (like u can on the asr).. can this be done with a midi controller and mpc 1000... which controller should i look at and how should i hook it up...thnx
