Best software for recording through a Delta 1010?

I'm trying to help this old rocker type cat switch to computer based recording...
He hates his ADAT...
He bought a Delta 1010 and he wanted help with Sonar 3...
I said I never used it but I showed him around reason and acid real quick...
I spent like an hour over there for free because I wanted to check out his gear neway...
But at this point it's a headache workin with dude cuz he is completely computer illiterate, so I can't put in anymore free time, but I don't know if my knowledge and skills in this arena are strong enough to demand cash...
What would you do?

midi, audio, mixing, software, hardware is impossible to teach someone all these areas because you must ask yourself how long did it take yourself to learn them. basically all you can do is point he or she in the right direction and they have to carry the ball from there. there is nothing wrong with answering questions but to hand feed info to someone is another story. the delta card must have come with recording software (watered down verisioin) set he or she up with that and if they really want to know they will find how, the same way you did. understanding this sh*t is not easy just let them know that.

He bought the delta 1010 used and paid what it goes for new, the seller was supposed to get it all set up for him, that's why he paid so much.
The kid came over and installed Reason and left.

I said I would try to help because it was good experience working around some vintage gear.

But I get there and spend an hour just trying to communicate with this guy about what his goal is.

At this point I don't want the headache unless I get paid but I've only ever made sample based hip-hop and jungle on software, I've never recorded live musicians on a computer.

I know I could figure it out but I want to do some homework before I go in asking for $50/hour.

Once the 1010 is hooked up and drivers have been installed, you'll need to set up Sonar. I haven't used sonar 3 myself, but you'll have only two things to do:
1: make sure all the 1010's in and outputs are physically available in Sonar. Go to cakewalk.com to learn how to do this.

2. Open a new file. Add 5 stereo (or 10 mono) audiotracks to the project (usually pressing ctrl-n will do the trick, and should impress the heck out of your now paying rockstar). Now assign the inputs 1 till 10 to these tracks, there should be a dropdown list on each track called input.
Save the file as a template.

now the rocker only has to open the template and arm the tracks to start recording.

I got something very similar to what you described going with Acid.

no, he does not have to have sonar per say but a application that allows mutli track recording (sonar, cubase, tracktion, so on). delta 1010 is over kill for acid because you can only record 1 track at a time in acid. reason you cant record at all. i believe the delta 1010 has 10 audio in and 10 out, therefore to fully utilitize the delta 1010 you need an app. that can record mutli inputs. i do not know who makes the delta but go to the website and get the latest driver. install driver and soundcard. use asio driver with the audio app and you should be set.

if the computer you are installing the delta 1010 is window xp (which means a newer computer) you should not have any problems.

The only problem with using ACID 4.0 (unless it is just me) is that you can't record all 10 tracks simultaneously. In programs like Sonar, Nuendo, Pro Tools LE, Cubase, Audition, etc. you can really multi-track. I personally use Nuendo 2.0 and it will allow me to track out 10 tracks through my soundcard with the push of a button.

In your position, i would just tell him to get a free multitracker like n-track or ProTools free and figure it out by himself.
Unless he's a friend, or you need to make some money for yourself.

Ok quik question: Does Adobe Auditon allow you to multiTrack in Realtime? I dont think that Cool Edit does.

It did when I used my Delta 44, but I have not been able to figure it out with my EMU 1212M using my ADAT opticals. In short yes depending on the sound card.

pro tools wont run wit a delta will it ....ptools needs hardware 2 run it doesnt it it wont open unless it recognizes it own hardware attached to the computer rite ....sum 1 correct me if im wrong

dj u are correct, pro tools work only with thier hard ware.
good software to use with the delta 1010, cubase, audition, anything but sonar, tht ism has too many compatibiltiy problems, and is very hindersome, not as smooth as the fore mentioned. on thing though audition is very easy to configure very very. i love it. personally i would say tht is the best way to go.

There is a limited version of Pro Tools LE that is free from the website and it will work with any interface. Go to http://www.downloads.com and run a search for Pro Tools. It will not run on Windows XP though.
