Finally copped a keyboard

Been trying my hand at beat making since 99 and I work with samples but I have just purchased my 1st keyboard.

Now im kind of shook, cos I got basically everything I need to make beats, so if I don’t make stuff I like now then………..

My current gear list looks like this:

Zoom MRS-4 = 170
Bush turntable= 60
Numark PT-1 (portable recently replaced my handytrax)
Boss Sp505 = 350
VC3Q = 140
Korg Prophecy = 180

And around 60 odd records to sample from, now I gotta learn how to program this synth anyone got any links to simplified synth programming tutorials?

How do u lot know when to quit buying gear? Cos im done with it now but it took me 5 years of trial and error to find a set-up im comfortable using,, but that don’t guarantee ima be making nice tracks.

You gotta work at it homie. Whenever you can, however you can. Stuff just starts to come to you. Change up your style whenever you can but never forget what you already learned. Get the equipment that allows you to make the music sound like you want to. But try to master everything. There's always gonna be a new keyboard, turntable, even MPC. Don't get pimped by the corportations.

I haven't gotten to the point where I stopped, but I have noticed that I've slowed down a lot. I haven't bought anything in the past year (well, some newer cables, etc), but now you ahve to experiment with what you have. There are going to be times where you just play with sounds on the various equipment that you have. I've come up with ways of making effects without effects processors, ways to dirty up my drums witth nothing but the MPC, and a ton of other things. Sometimes, too much gear can be a bad thing, because you have too many choices, but if you mpc ony had 3 drums sounds, you would make them 3 sounds work for you, so I tend to buy gear that's pretty much outdated.. the stuff no one wants is what I want. I love maximazing my gear, and pushing it to it's limits, and right now, the stuff I have is perfect.. anything I can think of, I can do, and that's why I don't need anything else. i know whats wrong.... an mpc is missing from that list!

you dont need an mpc to make hot shit... whatever works for you is what you need... i have an mpc but i use a controller keyboard because i like it better than the pads sometimes.... the mpc is not always the best tool for the job

I feel you on that tgw167.........He doesn't need an mpc, but on the other hand sometimes if you wanna compete with the best you have to use what the best is using. The mpc 4000 is my first mpc because I seen swizz beats with it in a video, I always new about the 2000 but I also did my research on akai, I new they were coming out with a new mpc, and when they did I copped it. Im suffering with the learning curve but its all good!


To sum all of this sh*t up you just need
minimum equipment with maximum creativity!

serious though : i think you're defeating yourself by trying to put it in terms of 'how much'. if you've got a hankering for a sound or flowchart in your head the way a signal would be run : you can start tracking down 'the box' to make 'the sound'.

what you might find in your keyboard is the ability to write fly beats that have 'preset' sound : running your prophecy through a guitar ring-modulator and tube ripper would make for some monster noise at an additional $300 etc.

kind of like creating your tone : when you're happy you'll know.
