J Dilla DJ Mixer

I was looking at these pictures just now of Jay Dee's late home studio, what mixer is this that he used?

looks like a pioneer djm300 to me, the first mixer i kinda owned
-no curve control on cross fader
but they sound good i suppose never thought of sampling thru it.
-decent eq, i used to have the pioneer efx thing that was the same style/build sampled thru that sometimes.

Forget the mixer! What kind of Monitors was he using?

that mixer has awful sound. I would not recommend sampling through that thing.

Sorry but thats not true and this is coming from a total Pioneer hater...the DJM-300 sounds better than the DJM-500 and 600..and better than the flagship DJM-800 also
It lacks the terrible digital fx circutry of the 600 and 500 and sounds cleaner with vinyl than the 800
It's simple analogue desing ain't too bad for a mixer of that type...i'm not saying it's the greatest in the world but it's by NO MEANS shit and much better than some shi* Numarks out there
If you are a electronic music DJ on a tight budged I highly reccomend those cos they are built very well (older ones are made in Japan) and sound pretty good for what it is..
It's no Rane, A&H or Urei but then it's not trying to be is it

The monitors are Event's and a set of Tapco's

he was using tapco s8's and even studio precision 8's (these are really good)

If you really want one you can probably pick up one for $50.

does anyone recommend any vintage dj mixers...from the 90s...old geminis perhaps?

looking for an old school one.

I expect you dont want to pay a lot but the best vintage mixers are Urei's and Bozak's but will set you back arround $2000! depending on condition

Check out old Biamp dj mixers, Audioarts and check out this groovy little Numark mixer that coppys the Urei..Numark's best mixer ever made under the PPD line imo but still don't sound all that (It's from the 80's)



Not that keen on old Gemini's...Oh yeah classic DJ mixer brand GLI (weren't they the first to stick a cross fader on a dj mixer?)
Also I quite like old Numark's like this one..only cos thats what most people and I used when I was growing up..deff check out GLI's though, a lot of old skool hip hop dudes used them..also you can't go wrong with a old Vestax PMC-05 Pro

Get those and you can sound just like Dilla

My favorite Gemini is the MX-2200 / PMX-2200 (same with replaceable crossfader and Jazzy Jeff signature). Would be a pretty cool mixer for a sampling setup actually.

The DMC mixer was popular for a while with competition DJs:



Vestax PMC-05 was popular from mid-90s onward and still is to some extent. Pioneers grew in popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s. The Rane TTM-56 came in later and is the current favorite.

Club mixers like the Bozaks weren't really for Hip-Hop DJs and if you had to play on one it was frustrating, even if you had the Rane mixers back then with the long faders that felt like they were lubricated with honey.

Vestax was the first company to figure out what scratch DJs really needed while the rest of the companies pretended they were not profitable, or maybe they just loved selling crossfader replacements.

Which events are those?

A while ago I picked up one of these for very cheap (compared to the advertised price 10 years ago):



and then realized how low-end they really were. They were advertised in the same flyers than the PMC-06 and 05Pro for like a 50% higher price...no VCA faders, that built-in "rhythm generator" is a joke, only nice thing in it were the 3-Band filters on each channel. But hey, I always wanted to have one of those things, now I got to try it for cheap and sold it later on for the same price again. I love eBay.
