APC40 vs iPad

I'm about to be investing in my first setup. I've dabbled with friends equipment, but now I want my own.
I want an APC40, MPK25/49, and MPC2500.

I keep reading that the iPad will be replacing the APC40 with all the new software & apps coming out.

Should I skip the APC40, and shell out the extra $100 for the iPad,
Or would an APC40 work better with the setup I'm trying to achieve?

i have an ipad, and i have to say that its not a real instrument, or midi controller even. i guess with some of the apps you could use it as a scratch pad when your out, but i wouldnt build my studio rig around it. its a web browser/reader more than anything. not a piece of studio gear.

though if you do get it, and you have a recording booth, go cop ac-7 pro. it works pretty well as a wireless transport. but thats about it in the studio, unless your tracking. then you can play games!! :lol:

if I had an ipad I'd use it as a content delivery platform ... or a "tray" as most people call it

I agree with this statement. I got the iPad when it first came out. I have pretty much every synth and recording app available for it. I've sampled a bunch of sounds off it and have gotten some real nice results but I consider it an addition to what I have. Not a replacement for anything.

i don't see 2d touch controllers as a replacement for anything (have you ever tried to turn a "knob" on a lemur?) as much as simply a different way of working. if you need tactile feedback (EX: would like the option of not always staring at your controller all the time), go with the APC. that said, your control options are limited to the pre defined automapping and what and how ableton lets you override with midi mapping, unless you're ready for the steep learning curve of max/msp or bome's midi translator (not as steep).
