Does anyone know why Technics 1200's cost so much?

Does anyone know why Technics 1200's cost so much? They are going for like close to a grand.

High demand.
Legendary status.
Great build quality.

Why dont you check out them TTXs?

you can get some used 1200's for $250 or so easily...

Most people don't take care of their decks and unload them because they have a problem.

they are that good, but 1000 seems like too much. I see them for 200-400 each

i got boxed mint MK2 1200's for US$400 each, they were originally bought for a bar which never used them, then listed on ebay to end at 6am on a sunday.. needless to say, not too many people bidding then. this was 3 years ago.

Man... I bought both of my old gray 1200's for $500 cash from downtown Chicago back in '87. Even with the modifications I've done to them, they've outlived anything else I've bought and owned. I've taken them to 9 different countries and both still work flawlessly today.

Close to a grand is too much. Here in switzerland there's almost something like a fix price for them. No matter if they look almost new or a bit dusty and scratched, they always seem to go for about 450 swiss francs, which is about 425 bucks (this doesn't include the cartridge usually). I bought my second one (got two SL1210 MKII) still sealed in the box, never opened, for 600 bucks (including a shure VS-15 type III something cartridge).

They cost that much because they have somewhat of a "legend / cult" status. They provide good sound (with a decent cartridge) and are rock solid. It's an investment like mentioned above. If you ever want to get rid of them again, you'll get back the same ammount you paid when you bought it.

I got mine (1210's) in 1995 for $450 each same place i had ordered my gemini's before em. There was no websites was catalog/mail order from source magazine ads by upstairs records brooklyn ny

the quality is what your paying for they are built to last a grand seems oddly high though unless they are the gold plated ones

Got mine a few years back off some kid who got them as a birthday present and never used them. They were immaculate, and only £350! Touch wood they're still pristine, never had a problem with them, although I do treasure my 1200s.

Buy cheap buy twice! Not that you shouldn't look out for a bargain, but there's a reason they're a worldwide standard.

But the key is you took care of them, most people don't or they have multiple users who don't care........

nonsense... it may be because i'm in a big city, but used technics in nice shape are a dime a dozen here on craigslist. i've even bought 1200 mk2's that were in near mint condition for $250 shipped off of this forum... don't act like it's a rarity. these tables were mass produced after all.

That's like me saying I f@cked a b@tch without a condom and didn't catch anything so that means it's safe to go raw.

The real on 1200's is most people don't know enough about how they should feel to see problems in the arm, platter, suspension or motor.
They are completely happy because a marginal 1200 is still gonna be better than what most people are using or use to.
Still doesn't change the fact that the table has issues from previous use and you will quickly notice if you know how it's supposed to be.
They have done a lot of little tweaks over the years that people don't even seem to notice but they made the table feel different, and I'm talking just on the straight 1200mk2.
