Mixing and recording setup?

I 've got a MPC 2500, an Asr10 and i use vst like sound module. I record my track with a Motu Ultralite MK3 and i mix them on FL Studio (i know, i'ts not a good daw for mixing...).

Now i want to buy an real mixer for mixing my different tracks or buy an audio interface with more inputs to record my tracks and mix them in a real daw (Cubase? Pro Tools? Reaper?).
I prefer the hardware solution, but i think we have more possibilty and liberty with soft...

What is the best solution? What is your setup for recording and mixing?

how much you wanna spend on the gear? can you be a bit more specific, like what exactly are you trying to achieve?

I have a 10 input audio interface. I have multiple hardware units (samplers, keyboards, sound modules) I used to run all my instruments through a 24 channel behringer mixer and then run sound from the mixer to my audio interface via the sub outputs. I later realized that my mixer was introducing noise into my audio chain so i ditched it for a simpler setup..... I now use a patchbay. I can route anything..anywhere. Everything stays hooked up at all times and you can simply route signals where u want them to go. Mine works like a charm. But yeah it would help to know exactly how you intend to use everything.

I can put 1500€ maximum. I want to record simultaneously all my tracks without having to disconnect and to reconnect my cables. Then mix the whole, with software or analog mixer.


@faze1: What is your setup please? Can you be more precise on the reference of your products?

The only real reason to use a mixer nowadays is to get hands on with the mix (EQ, levels, insert effects, etc). But IMO, unless you have a really nice (IOW expensive) mixer, you're doing more harm than good.

I would get a soundcard with more inputs if your ultralite (8 inputs) isn't enough, and I would stick to mixing inside FL. Unless you're willing to spend on something like this:

I have a Tascam fw-1082. It has a total of 10 input channels (8 analog/2 digital) I also have a Tascam PB-32P patchbay which i use to route all of my synths, sound modules, guitars, and turntable outputs to my sampler inputs (S3000, MPC1k)

S3000 outputs (1-4) connected to fw-1082 inputs (1-4)
Mpc outputs (1-4 and s/pdif) connected to fw-1082 inputs (5-8 and digital s/pdif)
I actually have an output from my patchbay going to the fw-1082 input 7-8. I have normal connections on my patchbay which means that it is internally wired to pass audio through if a patch cable is not connected. So if i decide to, i can "patch" another sound source to that input no problem. Again this works for me cuz ive never really been big on midi with all my different hardware pieces. I sample all sounds into the mpc.... so i just run stereo outs from keyboards, turntable, etc. to the patchbay and again "patch" these to the sampling input i choose. I hope this makes sense. lol I want that ultralite mk3 lol soon

You are all analog, why don't you just stay that way, and buy yourself a hard drive recorder like roland vs 2480 or akai dps, kord 3200 etc...

That way you'll keep your sound in the hardware and it will sound way better than software crap.

youll get plenty of pre amps, effects, a mixer, a recorder, all in one package. you will be able to record vocals, instruments...

That's the big mystery. We don't know what would work best for you.

So given that scenario, "best" is very subjective here.

I went from using an all in one solution (tascam 688) to going with a 24 channel 8 bus mixer/24 track setup and I'm happy.

Is it the "best"? No, but it works for me and it has for quite some time now.

I use Steinberg Cubase/Nuendo along with two soundcards that total 16 analog channels & a adat xt20 8 track recorder sync'd = 24 tracks.

I thought I'm familiar with gear but this mixer confuses me. Why do someone need 8 busses on an 8channel mixer (even with direct outs and 6 AUX)??

I'm looking for the Mackie Onyx 1640i, or maybe a Digidesign 003 factory (but i havn't Pro Tools, you know if Pro Tools is include?), i need too touch real buttons for mixing, i hate using my mouse keyboard to work my sound!

Macky onyx, Digidesign 003 (if PT include) or a combo soundcard + controler ?

yeah i'm in a similar situation and was considering the Digidesign 003....I like the multiple phantom power inputs.

Any users on here have the Digi 003 in their setup?
