asr 10 heads, convince me

i can cop one for 400 but it is lacking most of the preset sounds(previous owner erased them after deleting all his presets). can i get the presets online somewhere?

how would you compare this to the triton/motif/fantom group of todays workstations?

i am looking for something that has some decent presets, that is expandable, has effects, and can generally help me make beats faster.

i currently own a 2000xl, s5000, and ms2000r so i am trying to fill the void of preset sounds i am missing. 99% of my productions have been sample based in the past, but i am looking to go past that. i probably wont use the sampler too much in the asr, but might. that is not the issue though....

would i be better off copping something like the roland rs-50? or a rack module of some sort?

first of all, $400 is a really good price for a asr... what preset sounds are you talkin about??? the asr has a lot of character....once you get the hang of it you will see that chopping, editing, and adding efx is very basic and simple....if you do get one, i would consider hooking it up midi to ur mpc and using the samplr on it.. the sampler is really nice... but if your plannin on just using your other equipment for sampling the asr might not be a good idea...

i thought the asr had presets? am i wrong?

i plan sequencing everything with the mpc, as usual.

hmmmmm, thats interesting cuz from what i have read about it they make it out to seem like it comes with internal sounds. maybe not...

yea, it dont have any presets....yea, i got the 2kxl and asr combo too and using the mpc as the seq and the asr as the sampler is the shit... u will love it..

I use the same set up, sorry no preset sounds for the ASR. They do however have some factory sound disks with some OK sounds on them. I have'nt ever used them myself, but my boy uses them and they sound pretty decent especially with the effects.

so does this thing have any ROM, or is it like the mpc in that it reads strictly off of RAM.

and, if any of you all f or have f'ed with some of the popular workstations of the day, how would you compare? i mean obviuosly thats kinda apples and oranges, but work with me here.

The ASR10 operates off of Ram just like the MPC.

I've got the EPS16 which is the little brother to the ASR. The sampler on these beasts is insane. The effects and filters on it are great too. The only downside is that the sequencer is pretty lame in my opinion. But you've got the MPC so just the sequencer on the MPC to trigger the ASR and you'll be straight. The MPC and ASR together make a bulletproof combo.

but if you're looking for something to make mostly synth beats and you weren't gonna be using the sampler on the ASR then you may wanna check out an old Roland JV1080. You can pick em up cheap ($300) and they've got great sounds. The Proteus2000 is nice too but I think the Roland is much more realistic sounding.

anyways, good looks on the advice. im thinkin maybe the asr aint really for me considering i already got the 2000xl and s5000, a third sampler in the mix would be a little overkill. i've got access to the roland jd990, a predecessor of the jv and xv series, so maybe i should check that out. but at 400 for the asr, its almost a shame to let that go...

Get the ASR dump the S-5000.
What it's like August now by October you will understand why it was a good move.
The sh*t you can flip on the ASR is hard to beat.
The S-5000 has a lot of features but no personality and just comes off as average compared to what you can make an ASR do.
I have 3 ASR's (use to be 4 sold one), 2 racks and one key, since Ensoniq is gone ya can't get parts so I like having spares.
If you get an ASR make sure it has the SCSI port, really it hard to deal with those floppy disk.
Then again if you are shopping for preset sounds then what the ASR can do might not make a difference to you.

Nothin much dawg, yeah I was talking to Dan about it at Richmatic this week. It's still happening, we just gotta try and coordinate schedules and all. It's gonna be ill though!

Yeah, since you've got both the S5000 and the MP I think you'll be straight with the samplers, but Butcher is right, you can freak a sample much more and the ASR colors your samples to give them a lil more punch than the MPC. Personally I'd get the ASR and sell the S5000, but that's just me.
