I know, retarded post. But I have an MPC1000 and I would like to get a better, more grimy sampler to go with it. Any recommendations? I believe I should jus get a new rack sampler as opposed to a MPC60 or 3000 so that I could use the 1000 to control it. So far so good? Now, would it be a bad idea, to simply sample through the new sampler, and then record that audio into the 1000? or should i jus stick to midi (I ask because i believe the 1000 i could do more if it was all in there... but I dont believe I know) my apologies for sounding like a douchebag

Think oldskool. When they made low bit samplers with analog filters.

Emu Emax
E-mu Emulator II
Korg DSS1
Seq Circuits Prophet 3000
Ensoniq Mirage

Nothing wrong with processing your samples though something that gives it character and then sampling back to the 1000 as long as you keep your signal clean and strong.

i have an MPC4K and i get dirtier sound from my ASRX and a Yamaha little sampler called SU10.it has low bitrate and adds punch to the sound.I sample the sounds back to my 4K and start arranging stuff 8)

sometimes i will just use the MPC1000 itself, run the sample through the bitcrusher, have the output route out to a microKorg or MS2000 for analog style filtering, then back into the MPC1000 and resample. very tweakable. you can also bitcrush your resampled bitcrushed sample, then do it again and again until your ears bleed.....

I haven't used a prophet 3000, but I don't need to. Its reputation precedes it. I have used the others. Old emu stuff rocks, the korg dss1 is mad, but grimy as **** (and heavy as a tank) and the mirage has real character too.

Of course, by todays standards all of the above are pretty limited, but the original poster asked for grime right? Any of these will provide it by the bucketload ;)

I would recommend a EPS 16 rack or EMU rack. Get something else besides akai so you can get another color to your sound. the akai rack samplers are good, but thats just a different angle I"m preachinga about.

sure sounds like you don't know much then.

Do you know the prophet 3000 is 16 bit , not 12 bit? Did you know that the prophet 3000 has a limited amount of voices which is what you don't want for drums? Did you know there are a ton of bugs in the prophet 3000, and that there was never and will never be a final operating system to get rid of these bugs?

If you are going to recomend a peice of gear you shouldn't be recomending it based on hearsay. Especially becasue it doesn't appear that you've read that much.

Out of all of the things you listed have you even used them once? You say that you have used the others does that mean all of them?

Emu Emax
E-mu Emulator II
Korg DSS1
Seq Circuits Prophet 3000
Ensoniq Mirage

Keep your hair on. It was a list of things to check out. I don't expect this guy to rush out and buy anything just 'because Rozzer said so'. The poster never specified he wanted the sampler for drums. He can do his own research I'm sure.

Thanks for pointing out the Prophet 3000 problems, maybe I shouldn't have added that to the list. All the others I have used before.

Peace.

its just kinda dubious to recomend something that you haven't read enough about

I have to second the ZOOM. For "grime", low-rate sampling, effects mangling, detuning effects, the Zoom ST-224 is the FMR RNC* of samplers.

To do better than the Zoom, you need at least an Emax which is 3 to 4 times the price and old as the hills. Even an S950 won't do what the Zoom does. The SP1200 is amazing gear but the Zoom is close and about 1/12th the price.

The Roland Sp303 is a similar unit.. and I imagine it is very similar to the Zoom (some say better) in sound mangling etc... I've just not used it myself (and that seems to be a sticking point in this thread...)

*FMR Really Nice Compressor : best compression for a tenth of the price.[/quote]

how would an s700 go for this kinda thing - are they 12 bit?

i found one for cheap the other day in a pawn store.
