Akai S950 Needed.

Just ran into some money ya'll ... Been waitin' on this return for the longest.
I need a S950. If anyone knows where I may find one - get at me. I'm dead serious.
I have a MPC 60ii that I have been gettin' wreck on. I wanna spice up the material and know the capabilities of the S950. Just have to get it inot my hands.
If you know where I can find one. Shout out.

seriously craigslist is your best bet. You really wanna check it out before you pay. They were made in like 89 so they have been around for a while.

I have a question. Should I go with a S900 upgrade over a S950. And what does the upgraded 900 offer ?

i have an s900 with the atari harddrive interface expansion board, and the marion systems 16-bit upgrade expansion which lets you toggle between 12 and 16 bit on the s900... it comes with disks for version3.0 or something... i think the installed version is 2.0, but can find out for sure if youre interested... the atari hd interface only works with 3 certain model atari drives, and can only allocate 60 megabytes if i remmebr correctly.... i actually have an sh205 and an atari 1040STf that goes with the harddrive that fits the s900 atari interface board too, its either 40 or 60mb... i have no midi or audio hardware for the atari 1040STf though... if i get rid of the s900 with these rare azz upgrades, id like to get rid of the atari and the hardrive too, but may split up the sampler and the harddrive/computer if the price is right... one things for sure if your interested, if you want the atari hardrive, your gonna have to take the whole atari computer with it... you try finding one of these damm hardrives nowadays....

The 900 doesn't allow you to upgrade the memory, which is probably the most important upgrade on those samplers. And if you're looking for an S900/950, you'll probably don't want to sample in 16Bit either...

What does the Upgraded S900 offer ?
Is it worth the bread to just get an upgraded 900 or what.?

and misc. functions that I will later have to look up.
I aswell wanted to know if the S900 can stand next to the S950 with the Upgrade.

Ok, maybe I wasn't too clear on that. You do not want to have an S900 if you can get an S950. All the upgrades the 900 can have are more or less useless.

You do not need an Atari or SCSI interface, the drives for that are even more hard to find than an S900 itself, and the memory is only like 1 floppy disk large anyway. Also, as I said, you cannot upgrade the RAM on it like on the S950. And I assume you do not want to buy a 12-Bit sampler just to upgrade it with a 16-Bit sampling expansion, right?

So try to get an S950 with one or two memory expansion boards.

yes, stilo has some good points about the 900 vs the 950, and also about the harddrive capabilities... the marion systems 16bit upgrade on the expanded s900 allows you to TOGGLE between 12 and 16 bit, which may come in handy depending on what your doing... the choice of 12 or 16 bit combined with the continuously variable sampling rate is pretty flexible imo... just keep in mind that to TOGGLE between 12 and 16 bit that you must BOOT the system either way, meaning when you boot, 12 OR 16 bit MUST be chosen, you toggle between them using a toggle bootup disk... let me know if you're interested in this s900... i just checked and the OS version installed in the 900 is 1.2, and i have disks for OS version 3.0 and 3.1, which is needed to utilize the atari harddrive interface... ive also checked out the harddrive, and it is only 20MB in capacity, which comes to around 30 720K DD floppies... also, the 900 accepts DD floppies, but i think that the s950 accepts both DD and HD floppies... other than that, i will PM you or email you more s950 pics later today... let me know if you are interested in pics of the s900 also...

aslso thought id list the functions that my OS version 2.0 manual that i have says it has implemented... keep in mind that i dont have an OS 2.0 disk but have both 3.0 and 3.1 disks... the 3.* versions have all the enhanced functions of 2.0, but enable the interaction of the harddrive via the atari harddrive interface IB101 expansion...

version 2.0 added features:


pretrigger recording

special one shot mode

crossfade looping

dynamic filtering

auto find of start point

velocity release by note on

combine 2 samples for velocity crossfade

changing velocity-mix curve for velocity crossfade type samples

time skew for velocity crossfade

copy of keygroup


keep in mind that ive not completely learned the ins and outs of this expanded s900, but i believe that all or at least most of these feature enhancements that were added in os versions 2.0 and 3.* are all included in version 1.0 of the s950... the s950 also has a version 2.0, but as far as i know that is only to implement the hardrive expansion board...


imo, yes, the s950 is a much better choice... the s950 i have for sale is version 1.0....
