Still more configurations to do... need to swing everything a bit closer too... might require some custom furniture. It has been refreshing to cut the computer out though. I think I'd prefer the synths on the side and everything else in the middle, but not quite sure yet. Need to try this configuration out a bit more to see what I think.

Got a few things here...

Yamaha 5" Monitors
Rock It 10" Woofer
Vinyl (need to get the rest up here) Rockin' Disney Classics for the baby
Technics 1200mkII Turntable
MidiSport 8x8
Patch Bay (for all my routing needs)
Aural Exciter
Akai MPC 1k
Moog Voyager Anniversary
Korg Triton Studio
Korg Kaoss Pad 2
A few (okay 4) Moogerfoogers
Yamaha Motif Rack ES
Access Virus TI Desktop (with the TI2 rackmount... go go dremel tool)
Synth Mangler/Hymn Strangler
Flame Midi Talking Synth
Lots of f'ing midi/audio cables

Not a perfectly organized setup... but I'll get there.

Baby and a bag of 150 fun balls just add to the chaos.

Dude, just careful with the turntable..you dont want it to fall ontop your love one...its not the turntable I concerned but your kid..

I hope it isn't off topic but I always wonder about some of the really nice setups like neartao's. They are really nice but how do you afford them? Is it some kind of steady day job or as a result of music? Just wondering

Yeah... I thought about that... she kept wanting to play with the turntable... I ended up hooking everything back to my computer desk.

Here it is... back close to the way it was :P

Image

So... okay the computer is hooked back in, but I haven't actually hooked it up to anything.

Major reasons for the change... I wanted to get the MPC back into the center stage instead of being off to the side and rather hard to access. Plus it allows me to quickly hook my 500 in and do things if I want to use that instead without having to remove the MPC 1k to make room. It's also nice to have access to the APC-40 if I want it. I'm pretty sure I'll keep this setup for a while. I felt bad blocking off the window... but this setup seems a bit better.

Plus the record player is *much* more stable.

I cannot speak for anybody else here... but for myself, I've been building this studio for over ten years. When you're not in a huge rush to get things together you can look for deals on ebay/craigslist... buddy up with sales people to get far better deals than what you'd find in store... etc. Sign up for Guitar Center mailing lists or whatever... sometimes you get awesome coupons that can get you better deals on new gear than what you can get in online stores.

Honestly... I've also dumped way more gear than I'd like to admit. This money usually gets folded back into new purchases for stuff that is more the way I want to go. Sometimes you get lucky and sell a piece of for more than you paid... sometimes you just sample the heck out of it and just pass it on.

Where did the money came from? Well I did DJ for a few years. Nothing much self produced, mostly spinning records/CDs... you can make money doing it, but it can be a *huge* hassle lugging a coffin with turntables/mixer... amps... subs... speakers. If you're any good you can certainly recoup your costs pretty quickly and pocket money for extra gear.

I ended up selling a lot of that stuff off though as having a child puts a pretty big impact on your free time.

If you want to have a decent amount of gear/software though... just save up the pennies. Make sure you research gear and invest wisely. It's easy to jump onto the next big thing, but I really try and look to get things that I know I'll want to keep around for a long time and not something that is just the next fad. Impulse buys will kill you monetarily and crush your soul if you don't feel like you get your money's worth out of the investment. It stinks to spend something on money you can't play... but getting high quality cables (so that you don't worry about them breaking and having to replace them) and getting a good furniture/chairs for a solid workflow/environment are definitely key.

Anyway... happy hunting! Don't get too jealous at what other people have, and I'd say when you see something cool don't be afraid to ask questions about what people think does/doesn't work. It will really help you get an idea for what you want/need for your own style and keep your stuff in check. I mean I've seen some *insane* studios that people have posted in this thread and would love to get a chance to check some of them out sometime, but on the other hand for me a lot of those extra pieces of kit would probably be overkill.

dude, some of us here, I think, save and waited patiently of buying gears that we really want..
and some of us just hustlers, get what we want for free...so its your choice which side you want on to create your own "perfect" studio and gears you want in it...

And I know exactly why you don't want this set up actually...there's a lot of space there on the table..so what happened next is...you will put a lot stuff that doesn't do about producing on top of it...

bottom line... again mess..hahah no worry same problem here...next thing I found on top of my desk were barbies and other toys..

it's safe for the lil one...

So far I've been keeping the desk clean. I'd actually like to get rid of one of the synths... maybe both and replace them with rack mount versions... but damn it is nice to have some keys to slam on. Pads are great but can't do everything. Although the tiered desk is nice, it isn't quite how I'd like everything placed. At least the cables are a bit better protected as my daughter kept yanking on them in the last setup causing me no end of grief trying to figure out which cable in the patch bay/midisport was loose.

And yeah... for now it is curious george stickers everywhere. At first it was annoying me having stickers on the gear... but now I'm just letting it slide unless it gets in my way. It's kind of like baby graffiti. Who knows, maybe she'll 'tag' the MPC next. Been keeping it fairly well organized, but not shown in the picture is the floor covered in paper with baby scribbles on it.

With the previous setup I could have her watching a movie on the computer while I jammed out on the other side of the room. Now if she wants to watch something it puts her right in the middle of everything which does make it kind of hard to work around. We've come to a bit of a compromise though, if I patch in the MPC to the left of the desk and give her some headphones and put her to the right it seems to work out pretty well until either one of us gets a little too crazy.

Peace out!

Like the setup... only suggestion would be to zip tie the cables up a bit! It's nice and to the point... for me it'd be awesome if it was a little cleaner.

You only have power to your MPC? For shame!

Just curious, you using standard line inputs on the mac, or do you have a hidden audio interface someplace? I'm doing line in on my setup at the moment and just using a patch bay to re-route stereo as necessary to different gear. Might be overkill for what you're doing, but with a patch bay you can re-route your setup without needing to redo all the cabling. Also, how're you managing midi/sequences? Through the MPC, X6 or the Mac?
