If I use my midi keyboard (Radium 61) with reason, the controllers (8 sliders & 8 knobs) are already assigned to useful parameters for each of the devices in reason. Seems useful to me.

i hate MIDI in the 1st place...

i just wanna make music... dont wanna get lost in all the midi mapping and assigning shyt, program this to that channel ... major reason why i hate software aside from the obvious is, all the programing and setups you have to do before you can start making music...

plug and play is what i love... something like the NI Kore or stand alone gear...

i do want to get Logic 8 tho as my main tool later on to rec all my stuff live... no midi.

you do the setup one time and that's it. You make it sound like each time you want to make a track you have to configer the entire DAW. If this is your case, stop using shit software.. go to mininova.org and download a program.. I suggest reason 4, because once you plug your midi controller ( In my case it is an axiom 49) it was entirely set up with no mapping required.

people balk at even the easiest difficult task if it doesn't have a kind of coolness to it...making beats is not a glamorous pastime

I wouldn't be surprized if pete rock does in fact use software... I highly doubt he masters his beats on his mpc.

I'm oh so curious now. What did these cats use to master and mix their stuff BEFORE software started blowing up?

most likely they used a good mixer, a half inch 8 track reel to reel, probably a studer. then when they did their playback mixdown they recorded that onto quarter inch reel to reel tape.

i dont use tapes... i use Audacity... and no midi or pro tools to track my beats out... i do it old school...

everything to the mixer and then the PC... i master on the mixer then send it to the PC to record and add FX... just one track.

only software that i can say puts good use of the knobs is Kore 1 and Kore 2...

my point being is i rather power up a MPC and be ready to make music...

then power up a Software... load a VST... then find out half the VST presets and sounds arnt in the same directory... so u have to reinstall it or find the files, blah, blah, blah...

hardware is just more reliable... and i dont like to sit in front of a PC screen and assign a bunch of knobs to use something that doesn't even physically exists...

I dont know what software you use, or how you have stuff on your computer organised... I have over 50 VST pluggins and I never once have had the isssue of not being able to locate a preset nor have I had to reinstall a VST.

As for assigning knobs, The flexibility is an advantage. One thing I do sometimes is set up my samples on the pads and set the faders to different effects such as delay, reverb, and some others... so as I get to the climax of the song (playing live) I start adding some more reverb to make the samples sound more epic.


Then sometimes I use them for real time fade ins and fade outs.


Oh, and as for the bit on assigning parameters to something that doesn't exist...... what do you think is inside your mpc? Let me guess, it is all analog with no cpu.
