Its going to depend on your DAW but they all have the ability to designate where your recording will be stored. Rule of thumb is to keep the operating system on a different drive than the DAW and you will get great performance. A lot of the stuff that I record at the studio is mixed at home on a little mac mini with only a GB of ram. This is fully tracked out beats, choruses, plugins etc. The external FW drive takes all the pressure off the main drive.
