Audio Engineering School Anyone???

yeah its wack. I have a friend that went to IAR and know he just djing in philly again. he said its the biggest waste of money. and when he tryed to get placement they told him to get lost.

im wondering if it holds any validity in the "real" recording world.

did anyone of you guys attend SAE? (and can recommend it?)

SAE looks like its decent for learning the basics but sucks casue u get no degree or placment or nothin...

A friend that works at a NY studio was interviewing graduates from all schools, even Berkley in Boston, they failed at every pass. example question: What are the typical controls commonly found on a compressor?

over 200 interviewed, not 1 right answer from these graduates.

Damn i was gonna go to IAR myself. Guess i might be changin my mind about that now. I have a IAR booklet right next to mean and i planned on attending it but looks like i might just change my mind after reading this.

Rap artists like good black engineers acording to young guru in scrath mag.

I noticed he did at least one track on the new de la.

If you want to learn engineering for YOU and not to get a job at it, go for it. But go to a school that's more cost-effective. Recording Institute in Ohio is a good option I was looking at. Also Touro DMX at Touro College in NY is alot cheaper than IAR I think...all the cats I know that went to IAR work outside the industry.

They're pretty much the same as each other. $5000 for an apprenticeship at a studio in your area. Half that money goes to the kind engineer who mentors you. There is a text book and you get hands-on help in a real pro studio where they will likely hire you when it's finished.

I'm starting one of these soon myself. The guy i talked with at getamentor was really cool so i'll probably go through them, but the other one seems great too.

Dont waste your time. I graduated from IAR a few years ago. They promise you the world and are mad nice when trying to get you to enroll. Once they have your money they no longer care about you. Every intership I came across was because I was grindin'. No help from them at all. The best suggestion I can make is purchase the amount you are gonna spend on IAR on your own equipment. Learn it then try to use the knowledge learned to land an intership with a studio in your part of town. Also subscribe to mags like EQ that share information on studio recording and books.

Yo I'm dealing with the RECORDING CONNECTION right now and I would say don't deal with one of these companys unless your in a Big market city or their are alot of studos to choose from to intern at in your town. Ow and find a lawery to help you with your conntract because they will ask you to sgin one. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS A CONSUMER Out side of these prerequsites, one of these companys can realy be a good investment of your money and time. Scout your area and do your research so that before you sgin that contract you can make a logical decision

That's god advice man. I was thinking of getting a lawyer anyway to help handle my beat sales contracts. It hadn't even occurred to me to have a lawyer help out with my apprenticeship contract. I haven't signed anything or paid anything yet, but I've had one interview at a struggling studio near where I live, but I'm still shopping around. I'm getting my next interview at a pretty hot studio in SF.

I am in Santa Cruz, CA which has next to no market for recording. But SC is 75 miles from San Francisco, which is a pretty concentrated yet fledgling market. I wish I could somehow move the rest of my life (my family, my wife's family, my wife's job, even my own stupid ass job) to New York or LA and work my way up in a hot industry city. But oh well, at least I don't have any kids!
