Korg Kronos Keyboard Workstation: Just bought a new toy!

That's cool. But the first time I saw M3, I thought it was one of the cheap keyboards with built in speakers. But I am not doubting what's under the hood of the M3 nor the Kronos. Its just an observation.

Most people will probably be disappointed with my review. I bought this keyboard for one reason only...I wanted a better keyboard sampler. So any review will focus primarily on easy of sampling, sampling w/effects, sample editing, multisample program creating, audio track recording, etc.

I'm not a Kronos owner, but I do own a Motif ES. It does cover bread and butter pretty good, but the ES's strings and pianos weren't anything great at all. I'm sure the XS and XF addressed the problems, but it seems that Korg has done a good job with Kronos.

After playing with it throughout the day, I finally understood Korg's way of implementing a way to do non-destructive chopping! (like my MPC w/JJ OS) I have been looking for a keyboard to do this for a long time. Apparently OASYS and M3 can do this has well.

You do this in the Multisample Edit/Multisample Setup. Using an empty multisample program, I pressed [Create] to make an new Index and assigned sample (New Sample____000-L) to D2 (Orig Key D2; Top Key D2). Next I pressed [Copy]. Then I pressed [Insert] multiple times. Each time I pressed [Insert], new Indexes was created to the left of D2 with a sample assigned (New Sample___0001; New Sample___002; New Sample___003, etc). These newly created samples actually reference the original New Sample___000-L without using any additional memory. Next, I go into Loop Edit to make adjustments to Start, Loop Start, and End for each Index/Sample independent of one another.

My only suggestions to make this better include:

1. Adding a Playhead Marker/Cursor to let me know which part of a given sample is actually playing when auditioning
2. An option to LINK the "Sample Start" and "Loop Start" for easier editing
3. A method to allow me to select an Index/Sample using only the keys. Currently, I have to hold down [Enter] while pressing a key to select different Indexes.

All of this already possible with the JJ OS...lol

tritons does that as well,to many steps to me,never used it.how many sounds does the kronos have and are they original sounds or did they come from the M3?

I would prefer less steps (see JJ OS), but it is a work-around and doesn't take long to do.

The Kronos sounds are taken from the OASYS plus new ones designed to take advantage of its 9 synth engines. Turning it on, the preload data contains over 2,000 programs/combinations/drum kits. It also have additional sounds/sound data stored on its hard drive you can load. It really is a tweakers wet dream. A program in Kronos can have as many as 16 sound layers. (Yeah...Kurzweil keyboards can do 32 layers but with only 128 MB). 185 effect types including realtime pitch shifting (without changing tempo)....

Kronos has been selling in Japan since 21 May. The 61 key version just arrived in the US within the past few days. One disappointment I have is that Korg is still working on the Editor Library.
