Sovereign, the Prod is pre CV era... one o the oldies, fine with me and i absolutly LOVE it, but its not an allround of course... but the perfect thing actually affordable as being a Monophonic.... i couldnt chop 3k on a minimoog. so i have my ideal substitue.

like the poster above said, ARP SOLINA or SOLOIST if you want THAT lush 70s synth String sounds.

or like i said if you ve got the budget get that Jupiter 8 it will give the best from everything i think... ultra fat bass and strings and and and....

i actually prefer several limited kinda single-purpose Instruments over allrounder nowadays.

and mac is always in sleep mode when i do music.... finaly!!!

I agree that software isn't the best, but its not a bad choice either. Just think about it, people are listening to music on Mp3's. The analog just becomes preference & yes it is my preference.

I'm starting to get more done inside the box. I tried hard to stay away from soft anything, but its so practical. I've been doing audio design for a client and it just so quick.

The Jupiter 8 is not my favorite for strings, but yes, with a synthesizer like that you can do just about anything, but the prices are prohibitive. The bastard weighs a ton. Once its set-up, don't bother worrying about ever moving it. I love mine, but it's cost a mint to keep it running. I have the 12 bit model. Super fat, but super temperamental.

The Crumar Performer is what I usually go to for my strings, but its a noisy synth. It needs a noise gate. If you wanna hear it just play Duran Duran's first 2 LP's and its all over those.

My favorite for string sounds though is my Prophet 5 & Nord Lead. Very similiar in architecture those two.

There is nothing like turning knobs and getting immediate results though, but software is not a bad alternative.

Solina String machine..Love that sound to bits, funny story a few years back I was going to buy one..price was really cheap. Guy calls me in the morning errm yea about that string machine...we left it on over night by mistake and errm it caught fire and now it's all burnt out inside LOL

My Roland JX-3P actually does some nice string sounds..pretty much all I use it for now days. What I like about it is it don't need tweeking in the mix, I can put that sucker dry and it fits doesn't even need reverb..those things are like the good topping lol

Shame all the vintage gear is so over priced now... Few years ago you could pick up Jupiter 4's very cheap here..now they are like mega expensive and JP6's go for what JP8's used to sell for bah

I would love to own any of the Jupiter series of synths..that be part of the holy grail of Roland just like the CS is the holy grail of Yamah drooolll CS-80 or 70 one can dream hahah

yes Jupi 4 was my first synth ever... what a crazy weird and obscure mashine... i wasnt up to it tho and sold with (who wonders) a few hundred winning.... next was Nord lead 1... nice allrounder but i am really not a fan of presets and saves and all that on a synth.... but the nords can do it all kinda...

well next one was a SE1 and to be honest, unlike many others here i did NOT dig it.... but i was hoping to have it kinda hands on like a minimoog etc... but it just didnt feel like an instrument to me... rather suited for sequencing DnB Basslines etc i suppose

now finaly i found my small funny super weird little Prodigy that gives me that beloved dirty vintage sound, i am only after weird moog leads and basses anyway, so its my perfect synt


switch18, bout computers.... i just realy NEEDED to make that step... i was going nowhere with my "mouse-musique" the last years.... back to real life now

i sometimes use the roland se-1 string modul.. got 2 for 30 euros last year.. funnyish!

I just made that step from all MPC to computer and not sure how I feel about it to be honest...
I still have all the gear and MPC though just that all the MIDI is routed through a Emagic AMT-8 now and MPC as a slave drum machine

Don't know if this was mentioned or not, but another decent synth from back in the day was the ARP Omni which was dedicated to strings only.

Then there was the ARP Quadra which I really didn't get into that much, but the Omni was the joint to have back then.
