best microphone - top end expensive..

anyone try out the neumann head (ku 100) I always wondered what that was like.

BYYYYY FARRRR the two greatest sounding microphones ever are the neumann u47 and the akg c12.

I use a Shure SM7b with a Great River MP-2NV pre. I love how they work together. I don't have a condenser right now, but if I were to buy one, I would go with something from B.L.U.E. I think. Considering my set up is in my house, and experiences with condensers here (I can hear birds outside my house singing), I am quite happy with the Shure SM7b. Actually, 90% of our album was recorded using the Shure and Great River combination. I also have a Shure M67 that I use when recording certain voice types. It sounds great on voices that aren't to deep.

What mics do you already own? If you don't have any good place to start is the tried tested and true C414 because that thing is a real swiss army knife in the studio.

Last I checked a new u87 was $2800 cad. The thing sounds awesome on voice with a nice pre but doesn't always sound so great on other sources compared to C414. For this reason I'd get the swiss army knife first then save up for mics for specific applications.

Then again your needs may be different.
