for example, I bought an axiom 49, granted it was local and brand new from the store... seeing how they pack those I would never order one online... they put protective cardboard on each end and some thin foam type wrapping around it before putting it in the box... something hits that in the middle and for sure the knobs and faders will get damaged. M-audio doesn't care because they are concerned with only shipping while they send out pallets of the shit, not when one person orders one loose. Also, I didn't get the software disk... now that doesn't bother me, but somebody else might find that useful...

Another example, the unboxing video where saint joe unboxed the beat thang... it was packaged in crumpled newspaper balls... what does that say about that company? They cut corners.


sure, none of that shit is vital... and I agree.. I dont really care about what comes with the collector's edition of halo reach or what have you...

Unboxing drama aside, the Octatrack is off the hook!
Like I said in the other thread in the MPC 5000 sub section, it's like a sample molesters wet dream come true. Don't go by the mediocre videos on YT.

The last two days I had some time to mess around with the unit and slowly get into it's deep functionality.
It's perfect for remixing and completely rearranging your tracks but also great for starting off new beats fresh in the box with drums, vinyl samples, synth sounds, whatever.. (there's a way for 'buildin' your synth via single cycle samples.. haven't tested yet).

8 tracks doesn't sound like much, but you can put like all the drums on one track and create your complete drum beat on this one track. Also the parameter locks are fvckin amazing for variations. Each stepp can have it's own setting for Play (including retrig), Amp (volume, pan, attack, decay, etc.), LFOs (can modulate almost all targets), Effect1 , Effect2... Each step can be micro timed, so putting in swing and getting a humanized feel is easy.

Unsing the crosfader to blend between "scenes" (totally different settings for the corresponding tracks) is the sh1t!!
Assigning all the fine tuning is really hands on and eeeeasy. It's mad fun working with this unit.

Triggless triggs are like parameter locks, but don't need the sample to be triggered. You can define any place in the running sample and change all of it's sound settings like with the help of parameter locks.

It's perfectly capable of producing any sample heavy genre, Hip Hop included. I'm gonna try some Boom Bap next haha...
Not as easy as with an MPC to get your ish swingin, think like in a DAW where you manually move notes to place them where you want them. But way beyond the MPC in sampling, sample mangling, creating variations and performing live.

^ how in your opinion is the build quality and what have you? so far so good though, I cant wait to see/hear how it sounds in the hands of an mpc head.

Build quality is incredibly good. That's what makes working with it all the more fun.
The case is of metal, really thick, steel plate I think. The push encoders are really firm and still move really well. The buttons are also sturdy. The crossfader moves like butter but seems undestroyable. It's the optical type, no carbon lanes, millions of operations.

No joke, I've never seen or had a machine (not only music equipment) that was this sturdy and still looked and felt so sweet.

I sound like a fanboy lol.

Only because of the fact that Octatrack is LESS expensive than BT. Indeed, they should not be compared in serious context.

Anything will do, even if you use the Amen break. I just want to see a basic beat made on it and how the Octatrack manipulates it.

most of the videos i've seen are already produced beats with the fx section going crazy. i'd be more interested in the process from scratch.
