You can actually make a 2u "vintage" unit from the mini-kit, but I haven't seen the info on where to source the faceplate etc...

Normal service for the mechanics.

All mech switches cleaned

All control switches on the front panel are replaced by new Alps switches.

JFET buffer installed to reduce the PB noise.

Recording amplifier modified to provide 10 dB more headroom - enough to record on top quality metal tape.

The original (worn) MX permalloy head is replaced by NOS Canon S&S (laminated sendust) long life sandwich head.

All required playback and recording adjustments done.

4066 monitor switch IC replaced with the ANT4066A chip

Headphone amp is modified for better sound.

All pots are cleaned and greased using DeoxIt FaderLube.

The frequency response now is 10Hz to 23kHz (-3dB) or to 25 kHz (-6dB) at -20dB DIN level with metal tape (Type IV), 10Hz to 20 kHz (-3dB) at -20 dB DIN with Type I and Type II.

did you do this yourself? how often do you need the maintenance?

Hey, no I had this done by a specialist.

I got fed up of buying crappy used decks off ebay and I was talking to Alex and he mentioned he had this deck which was all serviced up and offered it to me for a good price.
I wasn't keen on getting another Technics, as un-modified I think are quite mediocre sound wise but with all the stuff he's done to it, I think it sounds great and the mechanics on it are very good.

I just wanted something decent, no Nakamichi as I don't have that kind of money so this Tech fits right in.

I clean the heads and degauss regularly so hopefully it wont need maintenance for a good few years... I hope

I also have a Foestex 4 track which I use as a lo-fi recorder and that's still working great.
