but its NOT out, as of now its simply marketing hype behind some vaporware

and even IF it does there is no guarantee it will be sold in a sales channel where it has the ability to even compete with the likes of AKAI/MOTU/NI/Roland

True but we have to give small companies a chance to compete. The only way they can do that is to compete by viral marketing. No one can compete with the budgets these bigger companies have amassed. I am not saying this thing is dope and I am not endorsing it. I am, however, endorsing the idea of competitors.

If these guys are willing to listen to us why don't we give them something to listen too besides "you're whack" "this is lame" etc etc etc

They know they need people like us to make this things work. Tell them what you want.... maybe it will happen. Maybe it won't
But it is worth trying to get some competition in this market.

I want an easier OS and interface that is consistently being updated. No drum machines or sequencers have good OS or interfaces usually

Also, I want a manual that is easy to read and not printed on bad toilet paper. And maybe a manual with atleast one page of color. Real users will read there manuals eventually.

I want something that can be portable or stationary.

I also want something that is sturdy enough for travel or live use

I also want a case to be produced that I can purchase for a drum machine

There.... I started!

ok great competition.......now as for putting together the capital to manufacture x amount of said drum machine will easily be $200k in China and exponentially more domestically, are they even capable of this?

sorry guys just not a big fan of product announcements on products from unknown entities that are still in development

Its called venture capitalist and investors. If they make this thing good enough people will invest to have it built and shipped, etc. But for now THEY HAVE TO MAKE IT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THAT TO HAPPEN.

I think that makes sense. So tell them what you want. The market is demanded by our wants. If they don't meet them then we won't cop. They know that. That is business.

The only problem I see that is a huge deterrent is we have a bad market. Depends on how long development takes, but they could enter the market when its strong again... who the F knows.

It has to be $1000 or more. Especially smaller production runs raise prices.... Depends cost of materials though. With the economy they might be able to get materials for cheaper. Who knows.

if it were only that simple...lol

You don't get VC money for the release of one product in the MI market, the return on the investment is not high enough....

and as a manufacturer with no other products, brand name, and a current share of the market you get zero investment

initial setup costs and prototypes for products like this is easily $50-100k if not more, and then after you fix the hardware bugs you get to layout another $50-100. internal power supply add another $20k for FCC certification. all of this before you even have units manufactured and ready to ship. so with R&D you're looking at half a million easy (to do it right).

if parts cost is $500, they sell direct at $1k retail, thats $500 per unit profit

or 1000 units to break even.....

in 2007 approx 21,000 drum machines were sold in the US (according to NAMM)

say 40k units globally

1k/40k=2.5%

so they would need a 2.5% market share selling direct with no marketing budget to just break even

Like I said, I wish them the best but I don't see how they can bring this to market successfully

an internal power supply needs to be fcc tested, even with an external you still need a LOT of capital upfront...

this kind of math isnt just a hobby for me

Monome did it, this is the Monome of soldier boy beats. You should look up 'crunk' on youtube and realize how large of a market they have.

Monome and what these guys promise are two completely different ballparks. Monome is a simple MIDI controller, and yet they had to sell it at some $500 for the smallest. Now extrapolate that to an all-in-one groovebox/sampler/sequencer/beat machine with grillz!

right - monomes are so cool but have a limited purpose, and the price has always been a major detractor
this is intended to be an all in 1 - with a limited production run you'd think they'd want to shy away from the unnecessary glitter to cut costs.

this is why like it or not, music software is really the way things are going to go. the potential for innovation is so much more prevalent when you don't have to worry about production costs etc - when you're just 1 brilliant nerdy developer working out of your parents' attic creating something innovative and incredible you don't have to concern yourself with so much of the hardware game
